Spartans Tied For First Heading Into Final Round of the Big Ten Championships

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – The Michigan State women's golf team will head into the final round of the Big Ten Championships tied with Maryland at 9-under-par 567. The Spartans shot a 7-under-par 281 on Saturday in the second round at TPC River's Bend, while Maryland was 8-under-par 280. Both the Spartans and Terrapins are seven shots ahead of third-place Michigan; the three teams are the only ones in the field under par.

Four Spartans are in the top 15, led by freshman Leila Raines, who is in second place at 4-under-par 140 and just one shot back of Maryland's Laura Van Respaille for the lead. Raines, who lead after yesterday's opening round following her 3-under-par 69, started Saturday where she left off. Raines put up eight pars and one birdie to make the turn at 1-under-par which is where she ended the day with a 1-under-par 71.
Valery Plata had the second-lowest score of any of the 78 players in the field on Saturday with a 4-under-par 68. Plata played bogey-free with a pair of birdies on the front and back nine. Overall, she is 1-under-par 143 and tied for eighth place, leaping 25 spots up the leaderboard.
Paz Marfa Sans and Valentina Rossi are both tied for 14th place at even-par 144. Marfa Sans shot her second straight 72 on Saturday. Rossi had the best front nine of any Spartan on Saturday as she made the turn at 3-under-par with the help of three birdies. The freshman wound up with a 2-under-par 70, jumping 10 spots up the leaderboard.
After a 1-over-par 73 in the second round, senior Yurika Tanida is tied for 19th place at 1-over-par 145.
Haylin Harris is tied for 22nd at 3-over-par 147. Harris shot a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday.
Sunday's final round will begin between 9:48-10:33 a.m. for the Spartans, who are seeking their third Big Ten crown since 2017.
