EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State football team held its seventh practice of the spring on Tuesday morning under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s on the outdoor turf field behind the Duffy Daugherty Football Building.
Following practice, Spartan head coach Mel Tucker recapped Saturday's scrimmage and provided an update on the team to the media.
"I thought the scrimmage was very competitive – it was a physical scrimmage," Tucker said. "We have a long way to go; we're still building…We have competition at every position, and guys are really fighting for jobs. And we carried that over into today's practice this morning. We still have quite a ways to go. It's a process, culturally, how we go about our business. It's still not where we need it to be. (We just finished) practice No. 7, and we're giving all these guys an opportunity to show what they can do."
Michigan State is scheduled to complete its 15 allotted spring practices with the spring game on Saturday, April 24. MSU is in its third week of spring practice will return to the field for the eighth workout of the spring on Thursday morning.
"I've talked to (our team) about the aggregation of marginal gains," said Tucker. "Everyone get two percent better, one or two percent better every day, and it adds up, and we can just keep moving forward and improving our football team, and after practice 15, we'll see where we are.
"Every day is an opportunity to show what you're all about and how much you've learned and can you improve, can you take it from the classroom to walk through to individual work to group work to a scrimmage and eventually, to a game. So it's a process. We've been getting good work in, but we're still a work in progress. We do need to keep raising the bar and get as much out of these guys as we can."
