4/7/2021 3:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 6-seed Michigan State men's soccer will face No. 3-seed Michigan on Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
This is the second-straight season that the Spartans (4-6) and the No. 20 Wolverines (5-3-1) have met in the Big Ten Tournament. Last season, U-M ended MSU's season with a 2-1 win in Ann Arbor on Nov. 10.
This will be the first time that the two teams have met three times in a season. The Wolverines have captured the first two meetings this year.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior midfielder Jack Beck's long-range blast in the 73rd minute guided the Michigan State men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio in the Spartans' regular-season finale.
MSU ends the regular season with a 4-6 record winning its final two games of the regular season.
BIG NUMBERS ON THE BOARD
The four goals that the Spartans scored against Wisconsin on March 31 was the most since the Spartans defeated UC Riverside, 5-1, on Sept. 3, 2018.
LOOKING AT THE WOLVERINES
Michigan State holds the overall series lead with Michigan, 33-11-7, but the Wolverines have won the last four meetings. Michigan won the regular season meeting last year as well as the Big Ten Tournament game. This season, U-M won the game in Brighton on Feb. 23, 1-0. The Wolverines also captured the game in East Lansing on March 23, 2-1. This is the second-straight season that the teams have met in the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor.
Michigan's Marc Ybarra is seventh in the league in points scored with nine, averaging 1.00 ppg. Goalkeeper Owen Finnerty is second in the Big Ten in goals against average (0.82).
DURING THE WINNING STREAK
During the Spartans two-game winning streak, the MSU offense has broken out for five goals, while allowing only one goal. Redshirt-sophomore Will Perkins and junior Olu Ogunwale have both broken out for one goal and one assist in the last two games. Five different Spartans have scored in the last five games.
The Michigan State defense has been solid as redshirt-junior goalkeeper Hunter Morse has only had to make one save over the last two games.
For his efforts, Perkins was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the week.
GETTING IN THE GAME
So far this year, only two different players have started every game in junior midfielder Jack Beck and sophomore defender Nick Stone. After missing two games, junior forward Farai Mutatu returned against Wisconsin with limited minutes. Newcomers Luke Morrell, Louis Sala and Jack Zugay have both played in all 10 games, along with Will Perkins.
STAYING SAFE
Michigan State is one of only three Big Ten teams to play all 10 games this season along with Northwestern and Wisconsin.
