EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 7 Michigan defeated the Michigan State men's tennis team on Friday afternoon, 7-0.
The match started outside at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts under partly cloudy skies, a steady wind and temperatures in the low-70s. Although Nick Williams and Drew Keene battled No. 23 Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar at No. 1 doubles, the match went unfinished at 5-5 as Michigan (12-2, 12-1 Big Ten) won on the second and third courts to secure the point.
The rain came down at the beginning of singles play, forcing action indoors to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. After about a 40-minute delay, singles action started up again inside, but unfortunately for the Spartans, they were swept in all six matches. Williams won the second set on the top court against Fenty to force a super tiebreaker, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
"When you start outside and then go inside, it changed the game," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "It did give us an opportunity to reset and slow their momentum down. The rain game in, and we were able to regroup. I do think that we competed. Michigan is one of the top teams in the Big Ten. I told the guys we get another opportunity and it's the second half on Sunday."
Michigan State (5-10, 5-8 Big Ten) will make the return trip to Ann Arbor on Sunday, April 9 at noon.
