Spartans Shoot Up Leaderboard and Into Tie For Third at Big Ten Championship

CARMEL, Indiana – The Michigan State men's golf team jumped six spots up the leaderboard on Saturday in the second round of the Big Ten Championships at Crooked Stick Club in Carmel, Indiana. The Spartans' 6-over-par 294 tied for the lowest round of the day. Overall, MSU is now 30-over-par 606 (312-294) and tied with Northwestern for third place.

No. 11 Illinois leads the field at 18-over-par 594, two shots ahead of second-place Iowa. The fifth (Rutgers) through ninth (Indiana) teams in the field are separated by just five shots heading into Sunday's final round.
Four Spartans bettered their scores on Saturday over the first round. James Piot led all Spartans on Saturday with a 1-under-par 71, cutting six strokes off his opening-round score. Piot made the turn at 1-over-par, but then played bogey-free on the back and picked up a couple of birdies to end the day as one of just six players in the field to shoot under par on the day.
Piot stands at 6-over-par 148 and in a tie for sixth place.
Like Piot, fellow senior Andrew Walker also shaved six shots off his opening-round total, carding a 1-over-par 73 on Saturday. Walker was 2-over-par through nine holes, but two birdies over the final six holes, including the last of the day, got him to 1-over-par 73.
At 8-over-par 152, Walker is tied for 16th place.
Troy Taylor II shot a 5-over-par 77 on Saturday and is just outside the top-20, as his 9-over-par 153 currently puts him in a tie for 21st place.
August Meekhof and Bradley Smithson both shot 3-over-par 75s on Saturday, lowering their scores by five and six shots, respectively, over the opening round. Meekhof is tied for 30th place at 11-over-par 155, while Smithson is 12-over-par 156 and tied for 36th place.
Mac McClear of Iowa and Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Illinois are tied for the lead individually at even-par 144 – four strokes ahead of Piot.
The Spartans will tee off from hole No. 1 between 9:25-10:01 a.m. in Sunday's final round.
