The 2021 Big Ten Rowing Championships will feature a number of social justice initiatives, building upon the conference-wide work of the Equality Coalition, which is dedicated to constructively and collectively recognizing and eliminating racism and hate in our society by creating resources for inclusion, empowerment and accountability. A complete list of the weekend-specific initiatives can be found here. Â
Â
A group of rowing student-athletes helped craft the following statement which will be utilized at the championships:
"The student-athletes, coaches and staff of the Big Ten rowing teams are dedicated to using our voices and platforms to advocate for equality and equity in the sport of rowing and beyond. The sport of rowing is rich in competitive tradition but for decades has been shaped by white elitism. Through communication, education and action, we are committed to evoking change and creating a more diverse and inclusive space in the sport of rowing for all."
Michigan State is a three-time champion at the Big Ten Rowing Championships, taking home the title in 2005, 2008, and 2009. MSU's three conference titles rank third all-time in the Big Ten behind Ohio State (9) and Michigan (6).
Â
The Spartans placed in the top five of the Big Ten Championships for 14 consecutive years from 2000-2014. In 2019, Michigan State placed seventh (67 points) at the championships at Devil's Lake Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin.Â
Â
MSU won four consecutive Varsity Eight gold medals from 2008-2011, the second-longest streak in championship history behind Ohio State's six straight in the same event from 2013-18.Â
The winner of the 2021 Big Ten Rowing Championships will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship regatta, which will be held May 28-30 in Sarasota, Fla. Additional Big Ten crews can earn at-large bids into the NCAA Championships, which will be announced during a selection show aired on NCAA.com on Tuesday, May 18.
