
Miller Backed By Strong Defense in 2-0 Win At Indiana

Michigan State scored early, played strong defense, and turned the keys over to freshman Ashley Miller in the circle to score a 2-0 shutout win at Indiana on Sunday to close out the series between the teams.
Alli Walker started the game and freshman Ashley Miller finished it with 5.2 innings of relief, striking out four and scattering four hits to improve to 6-6 on the season. On the weekend, she was the pitcher of record in three of the four games, boasting a 0.89 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched, with 10 strikeouts against three walks.
The Spartans, who hadn't been able to get much if any offense going against pitcher Emily Goodin on the weekend, scored twice in the top of the first and then hung on to score the shutout victory. Singles by Caitie Ladd and Alexis Barroso started it off, and Zaquai Dumas reached on an error that allowed the two runners to come around.
Kennedy Wyllie had two base hits on the day for MSU (10-19), while Grace Lorsung had three of IU's five hits on the day.
Michigan State has a seven-game homestand upcoming over the next nine days, hosting Michigan for a single game on Wednesday before entertaining Wisconsin in a four-game set over the weekend. The Spartans will then host Penn State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 11 to wrap up the home schedule.

- Ashley Miller entered in the second inning, and scattered four base hits and struck out four over 5.2 innings. Alli Walker struck out two in her 1.1 innings to combine for the shutout, MSU's third of the season.
- Kennedy Wyllie had a pair of base hits, her first multiple-hit game of the season.
- Marissa Trivelpiece was outstanding defensively, making two highlight-reel catches to steal base hits. She helped turn a double play to end the sixth and stole a base hit with a runner on third to end the game.
STATS AND STORYLINES
- Michigan State put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first with a pair of base hits and an Indiana error. Caitie Ladd started off the game with a base hit, and after Mackenzie Meech reached on a fielder's choice, Alexis Barroso followed with a base hit up the middle. Zaquai Dumas reached on an error, which allowed both baserunners to score for the early 2-0 Spartan lead.
- Ashley Miller entered the game with one out and the bases loaded. She worked out of the jam, keeping IU off the board.
- Miller had retired eight batters in a row through one out in the home half of the sixth, when Grace Lorsung and Abby Meeks both singled through the left side to put a pair of runners on base. Aaliya Andrews lined into a double play to end what the Hoosiers hoped to be a rally to get back into the game.
- A dropped third strike and the runner reaching on an error forced the Spartans to record four outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Miller was in control and got a great catch from Trivelpiece to end the inning and the game.
