MSU nipped by UM in second low-scoring contest in as many games in series.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State was topped by Michigan, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Big Ten Conference baseball action at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
Similar to Friday night's series opener, Saturday afternoon's contest was a pitcher's duel in a low-scoring, low-hit affair, with three of the game's four runs coming in the second inning, and Michigan adding the insurance run in the seventh.
The Wolverines finished with three runs on six hits, while the Spartans had one run on one hit, a double by freshman outfielder Jack Frank in the second. Frank advanced to third on a wild pitch and sophomore outfielder Casey Mayes plated him with a sacrifice fly to center field. MSU's only other base runner was freshman infielder Brock Vradenburg, who reached after getting hit by a pitch in the eighth.
Michigan scored two runs in the top of the second on a leadoff home run, then a single, two wild pitches and another single. The Wolverines added their insurance run in the seventh, also on a leadoff home run, as UM improved to 23-11 with the win, while MSU is now 12-22.
Sophomore Jackson Bennett opened the game on the mound, making the first start of his Spartan career in his fourth appearance of the season and went 2.0 innings, yielding three hits and two runs, before giving way to redshirt-sophomore reliever Wyatt Rush, who fired five strikeouts in 3.1 IP without a hit. Sophomore reliever Burrell Jones pitched the final 3.2 IP and chalked up three Ks, while scattering three hits and one run.
"It was a tough day for us offensively. I thought we pitched well enough to win, without a doubt," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought Burrell Jones and Wyatt Rush both threw very well, but offensively we can only get two guys on base all day long and it's tough to win that way. We will go back to the drawing board and be ready to go tomorrow."
The Spartans and Wolverines wrap up their first full three-game weekend series in East Lansing since 1994 with Sunday's series finale, with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. The weekend schedule is subject to change based on weather.
