Early Runs Hold Up for Badgers In Series Finale

Wisconsin got an early lead and then held on for a 3-0 Sunday victory over Michigan State, splitting the weekend series 2-2. The Badgers are now 17-19 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 12-22.
Wisconsin struck in the top of the first, when Ashley Miller walked two around a pair of strikeouts, and then gave up a homer to Lauren Foster for the 3-0 score. From there, the Spartan pitchers shut down the Badger offense – Wisconsin had just two additional base hits and one more free pass on the day, with the three MSU pitchers striking out a game total of 13.
MSU's offense struggled to put together any sustained pressure all afternoon, getting no more than one baserunner in an inning and just four hits on the day. Senior Katie Quinlan had two of the Spartans' four hits, with Courtney Callahan and Kennedy Wyllie also contributing base knocks.

- Senior Katie Quinlan went 2-for-3, her first multiple-hit game of the season.
- Ashley Miller got the start and went four complete innings, striking out seven of the 15 batters she faced, walking two and giving up one base hit. She had retired 10 straight batters before the pitching change.
- Sarah Ladd threw the final two innings, striking out four and not allowing a base hit.
STATS AND STORYLINES
- In the top of the first, Miller picked up a pair of strikeouts between two walks, and Lauren Foster stepped in and put a 0-1 pitch over the wall in center field for a 3-0 Badger lead.
- Courtney Callahan and Katie Quinlan led off the bottom of the third and fourth innings by legging out an infield single, but the Spartans could not bring around a run.
- MSU went to the bullpen in the top of the fifth, and Alli Walker gave up a leadoff double to Morgan Kummer. She shut down the Badgers with a sac bunt sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts to efficiently end the inning.
- In the top of the sixth, a leadoff walk and a base hit for the Badgers to short put a pair of runners on, and the Spartans went back to the bullpen to bring on Sarah Ladd. She quickly got a pair of outs, loaded the bases with a hit batter, and then sent down Kummer swinging to end the threat.
