Michigan State rising senior Valery Plata was been granted a sponsor exemption to take part in the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give.
The 2021 Meijer LPGA Classic will take place June 17-20 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids. The official tour event will feature 144 of the world's best players competing over four days.
Plata will be one of three Spartans playing in the event as she'll join current LPGA Tour members Sarah Burnaham and Liz Nagel.
"I am really excited for this opportunity," Plata said. "I'd like to thank Cathy Cooper and Meijer for allowing me to play and test my game with the best players in the world. I am looking forward to playing, making the most out of this experience and enjoying the week with my family and friends."
Plata, a 2021 First Team All-Big Ten selection, led Michigan State with a 72.26 scoring average in 2021, which is the third-lowest single-season scoring average in program history. She helped lead the Spartans to the 2021 Big Ten title by tying for third at conference championship, while she also claimed the league's Mary Fossum Award for lowest stroke average to par (-0.57). The native of Floridablanca, Colombia tied for 12th at the NCAA Louisville Regional and finished tied for 50th at the NCAA Championships.
Plata ended the 2021 season with three top-five finishes, which included a win at the Indiana Invitational.
Tickets for the Meijer LPGA Classic can be purchased through MeijerLPGAClassic.com. Golf Channel will handle coverage for the first three days of the tournament (Thursday-Saturday), while CBS will televise the final round on Sunday.
