Former Spartan hockey player Jeff Petry and the Montreal Canadiens will square off with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, beginning on Monday night. Petry is looking to become the 16th Stanley Cup champion in MSU program history.
Â
Petry led Montreal during the regular season with 30 assists as he had one of his most productive seasons in his 11-year NHL career. In just 55 games, Petry compiled 42 points (12g, 30a) in the shortened 2020-21 season.
Â
An injury forced Petry to miss two games in this year's playoffs. He has five assists in 15 playoff games.
Â
Petry and the Canadiens have eliminated Toronto, Winnipeg and Vegas, respectively, to help the organization reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993.
Petry played in 118 games for the Spartans from 2007-10, racking up 67 points (9g, 58a). He was voted winner of the team's Dr. John Downs Outstanding Defensive Player Award in each of his three seasons wearing the Green an White.
Â
The last Spartan to raise the Stanley Cup was Mackenzie MacEachern with the St. Louis Blues in 2019.
