Spartan Men’s Soccer Begins Exhibition Play with Win Over Schoolcraft

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In the first of a trio of exhibition games, the Michigan State men's soccer team stopped Schoolcraft College, 9-0, Wednesday at DeMartin Stadium.
The Spartans welcomed back fans after only having families for the spring 2021 season.
"Thanks to Schoolcraft for coming up for the game. (Schoolcraft head coach) Rick Larson does a great job with those guys, and they came out and played the game the right way. For me, we obviously scored a lot of goals and that's one thing, but I think how we scored them with a lot of assists was from a lot of selfless play. So I think that was very good to see, to have a lot of team goals and not a lot of individual goals," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought we kept a pretty good tempo for a majority of the 90 minutes, and to me that was important. So it was a good start, we're really only two days into preseason. We're still in the honeymoon phase; but it was a good start tonight."
MSU was able to get 25 of 28 players into the game against the Ocelots. All four goalkeepers saw action with redshirt-senior Hunter Morse earning the start. Senior forward Farai Mutau led the way with two goals and two assists.
Freshman forward Zack Babiak scored the first goal of the season in the ninth minute off the assist from Mutatu. At the half, the Spartans would lead 5-0.
"It seemed like a different world tonight," Miller said about the DeMartin crowd. "I kind of forgot what it was like. Last year we only had two people per person, so having a crowd out there tonight and all the students, it was great and it's great to see. Thank you to everyone for coming out tonight."
In the second half, MSU added four goals led by a pair of goals from redshirt-freshman Kadin Shaban. Overall three different Spartans (Mutatu, Shaban and Vedad Kovac) had a brace.
Michigan State will take on Butler on the road on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m., before closing exhibition action at home against IPFW on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.
