Indianapolis, Ind. - Senior midfielder Michael Miller's late goal pushed the Michigan State men's soccer team past Butler, 1-0, in the second of three exhibition games on Sunday at Varsity Field.
"Today was a good result in our exhibition game. I am really happy with how the team performed today for a couple of reasons. We had some hotel issues and adversity, and the guys came together and pushed that aside," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We probably need a little more teeth in our offense, but we got into some good stuff. We just need to be a little sharper in the final third. Gotta give our guys credit; happy for Michael Miller. It was another team goal and that is great."
The Spartans are now 2-0 in exhibition play after earning a 9-0 win at home against Schoolcraft on Wednesday.
The first half was a tight battle with neither team finding the back of the net. Through the first 45 minutes, the game was scoreless with the Bulldogs holding a slight advantage in shots, 6-3.
In the second half, Michigan State settled in and found its groove. The Spartans were able to out-shot the Bulldogs, 4-1 in the final 45 minutes. In the 88th minute, Miller broke the scoreless tie taking a well-placed ball from senior defender Dante Morrissette.
The Spartans will conclude their exhibition schedule against IPFW on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.
Michigan State will then open the regular season with four-straight home games against Cleveland State (Aug. 26), Akron (Aug. 30), Oakland (Sept. 3) and Bowling Green (Sept. 6).
