Women's Soccer Shuts Out Eastern Michigan 3-0

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team came up with their second-straight win of the season on Sunday afternoon with a shutout victory over Eastern Michigan. MSU improves to 2-0, their seventh straight perfect start of the season, and remains undefeated at DeMartin Stadium.
Michigan State held an advantage in shots over the first half with 12 attempts to Eastern Michigan's four. The opening goal for the Spartans happened in the 27th minute when Lauren DeBeau was set up from the left side by Ava Cook and Zivana Labovic for a perfect shot into the net from 20 yards out at the top of the arc. DeBeau led MSU in the first half in shots with three attempts, two made on target.
The second half remained stagnant until until the 71st minute. From the left side of the net, Jordyn Wickes executed a pass to Danielle Stephan in the box for a successful shot into the top right corner of the goal. It was Stephan's first goal since Sept. 22, 2019 at Penn State.
Hot on the heels of the goal from Stephan, the Spartans landed a penalty kick when Eastern Michigan was called on a handball. Taking the kick was Abby Gardiner, who converted successfully for the third and final goal of the afternoon.
For the second-straight game Michigan State held an advantage in shots taken and shots on goal, totaling 24 and 11, respectfully. Eastern Michigan had five shots, three taken on target, giving Spartan goalkeeper Lauren Kozal her first three saves of the season. Cook led MSU with five shots, two on goal, while DeBeau finished with four and Labovic had three. Cook and Labovic were each credited with an assist.
The Spartans head out for their first road game this Thursday, August 26. They take on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant at 7 p.m.
