MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Michigan State women's soccer team came up with their third straight win tonight on the road, shutting out Central Michigan 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Ava Cook.
The Spartans move to 3-0, starting out the 2021 season with three straight shutout victories. This marks the first road victory for the Spartans since Sept. 15, 2019 at Oakland.
The first half was stagnant on scoring, with strong defense from both sides. Lauren Kozal grabbed two saves in net for MSU, while Central Michigan's Allison LaPoint had one, on an on-target shot by Lauren DeBeau. Cook led the offensive charge in the first frame with three shot attempts.
With five minutes gone by in the start of the second half, Cook was able to finally capitalize on her strong shooting with a successful shot. Guiding the ball across the field was Mya Fregoli, setting up DeBeau for a pass at the top of the arc to Cook, who sent the ball from the left side of the box high into the top right corner of the net for the goal. It was her second goal of the season for MSU, while DeBeau earned her first assist.
The Spartans outshot Central Michigan 16-12 overall, with Cook leading the charge and totaling a season-high seven shot attempts. DeBeau and Gia Wahlberg finished with two shots each, DeBeau landing two on target.
Goalkeeper Kozal anchored the defense for MSU for the third straight game, ending with two successful saves and the shutout.
Michigan State returns to its home field on Monday, August 30 for a game against Florida Atlantic. Sharing the field with the men's team in a pair of back-to-back matches, the women will kick off first with a 3 p.m. start time.
