East Lansing, Mich. – Opening up its 50th year of competition, Michigan State's field hockey team begins the 2021 regular season with a pair of contests this weekend in Kent, Ohio.
MSU starts the campaign on Friday, Aug. 27 at Kent State, before turning around for a neutral-site match with Saint Louis on Saturday, Aug. 28. Both contests are slated for noon at Murphy-Mellis Field.
Last Time Out
The Spartans took on intra-state opponent Central Michigan in a scrimmage on Aug. 18, defeating the Chippewas on the back of two goals apiece from senior Meredith Ross and freshman Ellie Rutherford. MSU then played rival Michigan in an exhibition on Aug. 20, finishing in a 1-1 draw, with senior Cara Bonshak scoring the lone Spartan tally.
Scouting the Spartans
Michigan State returns all of its 11 scorers from last season, led by senior Isa van der Weij and junior Celina Riccardo, who each tallied three goals in 2020-21. Riccardo received Big Ten All-Tournament Team honors after scoring twice in the squad's first round win over Indiana. Additionally, Bonshak is coming off a campaign that earned her an All-Big Ten Second Team selection and National Field Hockey Coaches Association Second Team All-Region honors. On the back end, senior goalkeepers Jade Arundell (12 starts in 2020-21) and Monique Jardell (four starts) will once again share duties between the pipes for the Spartans.
Preseason Honors
Three members of the Spartans were selected to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team on Wednesday, as Bonshak earned conference recognition alongside graduate student Maddie Babineau and junior Merel Hanssen. Babineau is a transfer from Providence, where she earned a 2020-21 All-Big East First Team selection for the Friars. Hanssen has made 30 starts at midfield for MSU over the past two seasons, recording her first career goal during the team's Big Ten Tournament win over Indiana.
Scouting Kent State
The Golden Flashes are coming off a spring 2021 campaign that saw them go 11-3 overall and 9-3 in the MAC, finishing on a six-game winning streak. Four of Kent State's five All-MAC selections from last season are back: the sister duo of Helena and Maria Cambra Soler, as well as goalkeeper Azure Fernsler and NFHCA Second Team All-Region pick Clara Rodriguez Seto.
Scouting Saint Louis
Posting a 3-9 record in the spring, the Billikens bring back Demi Sahuleka, who paced the team with six goals, as well as the team's second-leading scorer, Emily Wastell (five goals). Saint Louis will wrap up its opening weekend with a Sunday matinee at Kent State.
Up Next
The Spartans head back to Ohio next weekend, playing two games in Athens. MSU and Northeastern will square off on Sept. 3, before the Green and White play weekend host Ohio on Sept. 5.
