EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer battled with Florida Atlantic to a 1-1 overtime draw on Monday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium, continuing the team's unbeaten streak but allowing the first opponent goal of the season.
It was MSU's first-ever meeting with the Owls in women's soccer history.
Ava Cook drew the first goal of the game at the seven-minute mark. Lauren DeBeau took a shot from the right side of the box that was batted away by FAU's goalie, but Cook was there at the left goalpost for a left-footed kick over the keeper's head into the net.
In the 20th minute, Florida Atlantic came up with the equalizer off a penalty kick. It was the only goal allowed so far this year by keeper Lauren Kozal, who also recorded a save in the first half.
The rest of the game proved to be scoreless on both sides, ending in the 1-1 tie. Kozal tallied another save, a spectacular sliding block on a charging goal by FAU's Miracle Porter. DeBeau came up with back-to-back shots midway through the half, a header saved by Florida Atlantic's keeper and a strike just left of the goalpost. With time dwindling in the second half, Justina Gaynor had a shot blocked by a defending player and Bella Jodzis struck from the arc with a shot high and wide.
The two extra periods saw both sides racing to score at the last minute. Another shot from DeBeau and two from Ellie Rodgers were saved by defending keeper Amit Cohen. In the second overtime, Abby Gardiner narrowly missed a goal with another close save by Cohen.
Michigan State outshot the Owls 26-5, with Cook leading with five attempts. Rodgers had a season-high two shots, both on target. Five of MSU's 11 starters recorded shots on goal in the contest.
The Spartans (3-0-1) are back at DeMartin this Thursday, Sept. 2 for a game against Bowling Green. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
