THE CHAMPS ARE BACK
Michigan State is coming off a 2021 spring which saw the Spartans win their eighth Big Ten title under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, who is entering her 25th season at the helm of the program. The Spartans garnered the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals where they went on to advance to the NCAA Championships. It marked MSU's second trip to the NCAA Championships since 2017.
MSU returns several key players from last year's championship team, including Valentina Rossi, Valery Plata, Haylin Harris and Leila Raines, all of whom will be in the lineup at the Cougar Classic. Plata won the Big Ten's Mary Fossum Award last season for the lowest stroke average to par, becoming the second Spartan to capture the honor named after the late Spartan head coach.
SPARTANS IN THE SUMMER
Several members of the Spartan program had memorable summers in 2021, highlighted by another appearance in the U.S. Women's Amateur semifinals. A year after Valery Plata advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur, Valentina Rossi accomplished the feat this summer at the Westchester Country Club. MSU was the only school to have a current student-athlete reach the semifinals of the world's premiere women's amateur tournament in each of the last two seasons.
Plata, who also played in this year's U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and advanced to the round of 32, earned a sponsor exemption to play in the Meijer LPGA Classic. Haylin Harris won the Indiana PGA Women's Open.
