DAYTON, Ohio – The MSU women's soccer team completed a road sweep this weekend, topping off their 2-0 victory from Thursday with a 3-1 win at Dayton on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans move to 5-0-2 on the season, recording four shutout wins and allowing just three goals from opponents over seven games. Michigan State averages 2.14 goals per game, 15 total, compared to one opponent goal allowed each over three different matches.
The game-winning goal went to Zivana Labovic, who scored unassisted in the 18th minute. It was her third goal of the season, tying Ava Cook for the most by any Spartan so far. Labovic was all over the field in the first frame, playing the full 45 minutes.
The Flyers held a 10-6 advantage in shots taken in the first half, but both teams were even with two shots on goal each as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Goalkeeper Lauren Kozal had two saves to Dayton compared to UD's Madelyn Dewey earning one.
In the 63rd minute of the second half, Camryn Evans increased the lead for the Green & White. She was able to score on an empty net after stealing the ball in a battle with the Dayton goalkeeper in the box. It was the first goal of the year for Evans, ending a scoring drought for the senior dating back to September 2019.
Less than 10 minutes later, MSU went up 3-0 when Allyson Childers hit the back of the net with a penalty kick. It was a career-first goal for the junior midfielder.
The shutout was nearly secured before Dayton got a goal in with a penalty kick in the 89th minute. The Flyers outshot Michigan State 27-14 and tallied 11 shots on goal to MSU's six, but were only allowed one goal to score. In goal for the Green & White, Kozal recorded a season-high 10 saves, just one short of a career best.
Following a week of preparation, the Spartans will begin Big Ten play with a match against Indiana on the road on Sunday, Sept. 19. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Bloomington.
