"I don't think any of us are super pleased," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "We played the first nine holes of the tournament well, but were pretty mediocre after that. It's not a bad experience to be in the final group at the end, but we have to get a lot better if we're going to win these, and I think all of our guys agree."
Troy Taylor II and Bradley Smithson both tied for 10th place at 3-under-par 210. A day after carding a career-best 66, Taylor shot a 1-under-par 70 to close the tournament on Monday to ensure his second straight top-10 finish.
Smithson shot a pair of rounds in the 60s on Sunday (69 and 68, respectively) and concluded the tournament with a 2-over-par 73 on Monday. His 10th-place finish marked this second straight in the top 10.
August Meekhof tied Taylor for the lowest round by a Spartan on Monday with a 1-under-par 70. He finished tied for 16th place at 1-under-par 212 (71-71-70).
"Troy, August and Brad were steady all week and had nice finishes," Lubahn said. "I like the depth of this group, but we're making too many simple mistakes to really capitalize on the squad we have."
James Piot tied for 28th place at 3-over-par 216 (71-72-73), while Ashton McCulloch was 7-over-par 220 (70-76-74).
Luke Kluver of Kansas claimed medalist honors at 10-under-par 203.
The Spartans are back in action Sept. 27-28 with the Windon Memorial in Lake Forest, Illinois.
