Spartans Take First Round Lead at Big Ten Championships

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team fired a 12-under par 276 and has four golfers among the top-10 overall and all five among the top-20 to take an 8-shot lead after the first round of the 2022 Big Ten Championships, which started on Friday at The Pete Dye course at the French Lick Resort in Indiana.
The tournament continues on Saturday morning, with teams teeing off at 9 a.m., and closes out with 18 holes on Sunday.
The Spartans, ranked No. 46 in the country by Golfstat, had all five of their players finish at even or under-par and the team played the entire back nine of the course bogey-free.
MSU's 12-under par 276 leads the field by eight shots over Wisconsin (4-under par 284), with Illinois in third at 2-under par 286, Purdue fourth at 1-under par 287 and Northwestern and Penn State tied for fifth place at 3-over par 291.
First Round Results
Senior James Piot was the top finisher for the Spartans, standing in second place with a 6-under par 66. He is two shots off the pace of Illinois senior Adrien Dumont de Chassart, who fired an 8-under par 64. Piot's first round included seven birdies and nine pars. He finished his round with birdies on three of the last four holes.
Sophomore August Meekhof is two shots behind, tied for third place at 4-under par 68. Meekhof was 1-over par on the front nine with two bogies, but played the back in 5-under par, with five birdies, including three of the last four holes.
Junior Brad Smithson and senior Troy Taylor are tied for ninth place with scores of 1-under par 71, respectively. After posting a double bogey on the first hole, Smithson finished the front nine at 1-over par, but played the back nine with seven pars and two birdies to finish at 2-under par. Taylor, meanwhile, finished the front at 1-over after a double bogey on the seventh hole, but parred the seven holes on the back and closed with a pair of bridies.
Freshman Ashton McCulloch finished at even-par 72 and is tied for 17th place. He had birdies on two of the first five holes, then posted a double bogey on six to finish the front at 1-over par. McCulloch parred the first eight holes on the back before closing with a birdie on 18.
The Spartans will tee off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, playing alongside Wisconsin and Illinois.
