Mutatu Hat Trick Caps Spartan Comeback Against Notre Dame Tuesday
9/14/2021 11:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The Spartans overcome a 3-1 deficit.
With the win, Michigan State evens its record on the season to 3-3, while Notre Dame stands 1-3-1. MSU is now 4-12-2 against Notre Dame on the road and 9-18-6 against UND. The Spartans are unbeaten in the last four games in South Bend with a 3-0-1 record since 2014.
Mutatu's hat trick was the first by a Spartan since Jay Chapman against No. 16 Indiana on Oct. 28, 2012. Senior midfielder Jack Beck also added a goal and two assists in the win.
"This was a big-time team win today, and they showed a lot of character," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "After being down 3-1, I challenged the guys at half time, and they listened are really made the adjustments. We didn't give up a goal in the second half. The way we defended in the last 15 minutes - that is what Spartan soccer is all about. We got the lead, and we didn't give it up. I was really proud of how we responded tonight. Everyone gave everything they had tonight. It was just a complete team win."
The game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning in the South Bend area, but once the game got started UND came out hot. The Irish struck first in the ninth minute. Jack Lynn found Matthew Roou in the box and slipped the ball past MSU starting goalkeeper Lance McGrane to give Notre Dame the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, senior Farai Mutatu provided the equalizer for his second goal of the season. Mutatu took passes from seniors Michael Miller and Louis Sala to tie the score at 1-1.
The offense came fast and furious with Notre Dame re-taking the lead, 2-1 in the 21st minute. A goal by Eno Nto off the pass from Ethan O'Brien put the Irish up 3-1, as Michigan State looked to find its offensive rhythm.
The Spartans started the second half with a goal in the 51st minute. Freshman forward Zach Babiak found Beck for his first goal of the season to cut the Irish lead to 3-2.
From there, the Spartans took control on the offensive end. Michigan State continued to battle back into the game, scoring the equalizer. In the 58th minute, Mutatu scored his second goal of the game off the pass from Beck.
The game-winning goal was a stunner from Mutatu for the hat trick. In the 73rd minute, Beck delivered a beautiful ball up the left side. The midfielder found the right foot of Mutatu, who's blast got past Notre Dame goalkeeper Bryan Dowd. The Irish netminder had allowed only five goals in the first four games of the season.
Michigan State will conclude its grueling three-game road trip with its Big Ten opener on Friday, Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
