Spartan Soccer Battles to a 1-1 Draw at Wisconsin in Big Ten Opener
9/18/2021 12:05:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Madison, Wis. - In its Big Ten opener, the Michigan State men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Wisconsin Friday night at Dan McClimon Memorial Track/Soccer Complex.
With the draw, Michigan State stands season to 3-3-1 and 0-0-1 in B1G action this season, while Wisconsin is 2-2-3 and 0-0-1 in league contests. The Spartans are 6-1-2 in their last nine Big Ten openers. MSU had faced Rutgers in the Big Ten opener the last four seasons.
"It was a great college soccer game, and a typical Big Ten battle. We got out on a nice re-start; I thought our ball movement was good. Congratulations to Josh Adam on his first college goal," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "In the Big Ten on the road, teams are going to put pressure on you. All in all, I thought our performance was good. We looked like a team. I thought Lance (McGrane) in goal was sharp. We will take a road point in the Big Ten any day."
Freshman defender Josh Adam got the Spartans on the board first in the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Jack Beck provided a beautiful service off a corner kick. Beck found the head of Adam for his first collegiate goal. Beck now has a team-leading five assists this season.
In the 36th minute, the Badgers looked for the equalizer. Kyle McCurley's blast sailed just over the head of MSU's freshman goalkeeper Lance McGrane. In the final minutes of the half, Jack Finnegan beat McGrane, but junior defender Nick Stone was able to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
In the 59th minute, MSU looked dangerous when redshrt-junior defender Will Perkins found Beck. The midfielder's blast sailed just high.
Wisconsin found the equalizer in the 70th minute. Ignasi Marques scored his first goal of his Badger career beating a diving McGrane to tie the score, 1-1.
In the first overtime, the Spartans held possession for much of the 10 minute period. Wisconsin fired off a pair of corner kicks in the waning minutes, but neither team could score. In the second over time, both team had chances but the score remained 1-1.
Michigan State returns to the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium for a pair of games next week. In non-conference action, MSU will host Duquesne on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. The Spartans will then host No. 11 Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m., which is a doubleheader with the MSU women's team.
