EAST LANSING, Mich. – It will be a matchup of ranked Big Ten squads to open the conference slate this weekend, as the No. 25 Michigan State field hockey team faces No. 24 Ohio State on Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field. Following that game, MSU turns around to host Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Spartans and Buckeyes are set for a 3 p.m. start, as both sides look for their sixth win of the season and first victory in league action. MSU will then take on the Chippewas at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Â
Last Time Out
Senior co-captain Cara Bonshak found the net in the third minute as part of a two-goal game, starting a MSU scoring spree that saw the Spartans rout Ball State, 7-1, in the Spartans' home opener on Sunday. Freshman Ellie Rutherford and graduate student Maddie Babineau both had multi-point performances as well, with Rutherford tallying one goal and two assists, while Babineau had a goal and an assist.

Rutherford Named B1G Freshman of the Week
The four-point contest by Rutherford against Ball State earned her Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Monday. The rookie had a hand in three of the Spartans' first four goals and is the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week for MSU since Isa van der Weij on Aug. 27, 2019.

Spartans Enter NFHCA Poll at No. 25
Off to its best start in over a decade, MSU came in at No. 25 in the latest NFHCA National Coaches Poll. This is the first time the program has been ranked since sitting 24th in the nation on Oct. 1, 2019. The Spartans received 141 points in the weekly poll, capturing one first-place vote.

Jardell on NCAA Leaderboards
Senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell has been a big part of the Spartans' defense this year, and her stats reflect that nationally. In addition to pacing the Big Ten, she ranks third among NCAA Division I goalies in both save percentage (.929) and goals against average (0.33). Jardell and fellow senior Jade Arundell have combined to allow two goals through the first five games, only the fourth time a MSU squad has done that and the first time since 1979.
Â
Scouting Ohio State
The Buckeyes have the reigning NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week, as goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez backstopped OSU to a pair of wins over No. 15 Wake Forest and Appalachian last week. She finished the weekend with 13 saves and a .929 save percentage, picking up her 12th career shutout in the process. Offensively, Leanne Bough paces the Buckeyes with 10 points and five goals.

Scouting Central Michigan
The Chippewas travel to Ball State on Friday, looking for their second win of the campaign. Kate Biglin leads CMU with two goals and three assists for seven points, while Rachel Ruttenberg also has a pair of goals this season.
