EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis hits the road again this weekend for competition at the Notre Dame Bobby Bayliss Invite. The tournament runs from Friday, Sept. 24 to Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Indiana.
The Spartans have a strong slate of players ready to compete in the team's second event of the fall season. After last weekend's invite in which Carson Gates and Graydon Lair represented the Spartans at the Milwaukee Classic, the team is ready to officially begin the fall season as a group. For Jack Winkler, it will be his first season back since 2018, after battling through medical issues his freshman and sophomore year. Josh Portnoy and Max Sheldon will both see their first minutes on the court in what will be the beginning of their first season with Michigan State.
"We are excited to kick off the fall season at the Notre Dame Invite," head coach Gene Orlando said. "It's a great opportunity for our players to compete in multiple matches, singles and doubles, against great competition. We are hungry and ready to compete and put our games to the test against someone other than ourselves. There's no doubt we'll be an improved team by the end of the weekend."
At the last Bayliss Invite in fall 2019, Kazuki Matsuno came away with three wins in singles play, while Jarreau Campbell had one singles win of his own.
"Our fall season is all individual-results based, but it's always fun to be together as a team and support one another," Orlando said.
The Spartans host their first fall tournament next week with the annual Drobac/Beeman Invite. Competition begins on Friday, Oct. 1 of Homecoming weekend and runs until Sunday, Oct. 3 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
