No. 25 Field Hockey Downed by No. 1 Michigan
9/24/2021 8:30:00 PM | Field Hockey
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite 11 saves from senior goalkeeper Jade Arundell in her first start since Aug. 28, No. 25 Michigan State was defeated by No. 1 Michigan, 6-1, in Big Ten field hockey action Friday evening at Ocker Field.
In a game that saw MSU cut its rival's advantage to one in the final minute of the first half, the top-ranked team in the country used a closing push to score four times over the final 20 minutes of play.
The Spartans shifted to 6-2 with the loss, falling to 0-2 in the conference. The Wolverines stayed perfect at 7-0 and moved to 1-0 in the league standings.
Tina D'Anjolell did not wait long to put Michigan up 1-0, beating Arundell in front during the fourth minute. The Wolverines increased their early lead in the fifth minute when Anouk Veen scored with a direct shot off a penalty corner.
The Green and White kept their rivals off the board for the next 25 minutes and made it 2-1 with 42 seconds remaining before halftime thanks to junior Hannah Jarvie. After fellow junior Merel Hanssen raced past the UM defenders and put a cross towards the net, a pair of Spartan shot attempts set up Jarvie perfectly to tap home the first MSU tally, as well as her first goal of the season.
Michigan broke through again in the 41st minute, when Veen got her second goal of the game on a corner shot. The Wolverines then added their fourth goal just two minutes later, as Sofia Southam's shot from the top of the circle deflected off a MSU defender and into the net.
Nina Apoola added a fifth Michigan goal on the 51st minute off a rebound, and Lora Clarke put a shot off the crossbar and in during the 54th minute.
Arundell and her side faced 32 shots on the evening, while her counterpart on the other end, Anna Spieker, saving all six Spartan shots. Hanssen and senior Cara Bonshak each tallied two shots on goal in the loss.
The all-time series now stands at 47-25-7 in the Wolverines' favor, as the Spartans still search for their first victory over their rivals since 2014.
Next up for Michigan State is a matchup at American University next Sunday, Oct. 3. The second-to-last non-conference game for the Spartans is slated for a noon start.
