GAME CAPSULE
No. 15 Ohio State scored two unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and then iced the game with an empty-netter to earn a 4-1 victory at Munn Ice Arena on Friday evening.
The Spartans (11-13-1, 5-10-0) got on the board first, when Tanner Kelly redirected a Cole Krygier shot from the right point, with Jagger Joshua getting the secondary assist. A weird goal tied things for the Buckeyes (17-7-1, 9-5-1 B1G) before the first period expired, when a backhanded shot by Tate Singleton got by Drew DeRidder and lodged between the top of the back of the goalcage and the netting.
OSU scored late in the second on a beautiful pass by Georgii Merkulov, as his centering pass found Cam Thiesing for the freshman's sixth goal of the season with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Eric Cooley finished off a Joe Dunlap rush at 7:09 in the third to take the 3-1 lead, and then got an empty-netter with DeRidder on the bench in favor of an extra skater.
The Buckeyes had a slim edge in shots on goal (39-32), but MSU held a 15-3 edge in blocked shots, led by three from Kristof Papp. Both Jeremy Davidson and Erik Middendorf had five shots on net, but both had sure-looking goals stolen by Buckeye goalie Jakob Dobes, who finished with 31 stops on the night.
Michigan State gets the series finale with the Buckeyes tomorrow at 6 pm at Munn Ice Arena.

GAME SYNOPSIS
- FIRST PERIOD: Freshman Tanner Kelly, installed on the top line prior to tonight's game, opened the scoring at 6:20 of the game, tipping a point shot by Cole Krygier in the slot for his second goal of the season. The Buckeyes got the equalizer on a breakaway by Tate Singleton, who backhanded the puck past DeRidder and it stuck in the netting at the back of the upper part of the goalcage. The Spartans' senior goalie DeRidder made 15 saves in the period, while Dobes stopped two.
- SECOND PERIOD: OSU's James Marooney picked up a five-minute major and game misconduct at 6:27 of the second period, putting the Spartans on an extended man advantage. Jagger Joshua had the first good chance at the right post, and Dobes absolutely robbed Jeremy Davidson of a goal. The Spartans couldn't solve Dobes with the man advantage, but had a pair of great chances with about four minutes to go from Joshua and Josh Nodler. Past the 16 minute mark, Ohio State had it buzzing in their offensive zone, getting traffic in front of DeRidder; Georgii Merkulov found Cam Thiesing with a centering pass, and Thiesing beat DeRidder to make it a 2-1 ballgame. MSU had the better of the shots on goal in the period (14-10).
- THIRD PERIOD: The Buckeyes took a two-goal lead at 7:09 of the third, as Eric Cooley finished off a cross-slot pass from Joe Dunlap, who did the hard work by streaking up the left side with the puck and finding his teammate for his second gal of the season. The Spartans had their chances, outshooting their visitors 15-12 and putting good chances on Dobes, but the freshman turned them all away. MSU pulled DeRidder in favor of an extra skater, but saw the Buckeyes ice the game with an empty-netter at 18:51.
