Comeback Falls Short as No. 10 Michigan State Loses to No. 24 Illinois, 56-55

Champaign, Ill. – No. 10 Michigan State trailed by 14 points at halftime and by 15 points in the second half but made a late run and had a chance to send the game to overtime, but the Spartans could not pull off the comeback in a 56-55 loss at No. 24 Illinois Tuesday night at State Farm Arena.
Senior forward Marcus Bingham Jr. (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Catholic Central) scored a team-high 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots to lead the Spartans, while senior forward Gabe Brown (Ypsilanti, Mich./Belleville) scored 10 points and had three assists.
Junior guard Tyson Walker (Westbury, N.Y./Christ the King/Northeastern) added nine points and six assists and redshirt senior forward Joey Hauser (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point/Marquette) finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

- Michigan State falls to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten, while Illinois improves to 14-5 overall and 7-2 in league play.
- Trailing by 13 points, 52-39, with 9:47 to play, a jumper from Bingham and a 3-pointer from Hauser triggered a 15-3 run over a span of 8:48 as junior forward Malik Hall (Aurora, Ill./Sunrise Christian Academy [Kan.]) hit a pair of free throws with 1:51 left and then connected on a jumper with 59 seconds left to pull MSU within 56-54.
- A jumper from Walker was off the mark with 12 seconds left and Illinois' Trent Frazier missed the front end of a one-one-one with six seconds left, giving MSU one more chance.
- Hall drove to the left and was fouled as he attempted a shot with .02 seconds left. The junior missed the first of two free throws and made the second as the Spartans fell just short, 56-55.
- Trailing by 14 points, 34-20, at the break, the Spartans chipped into the Illinois lead, with free throws from Hauser and a basket from Bingham getting MSU to within 36-27 at the 17:19 mark.
- A 3-pointer from Luke Goode gave Illinois a 42-27, but the Spartans pulled to within eight points, 52-44, on a 3-pointer from Hauser at the top of the key with 8:11 left.
- The Spartans had jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a 3-pointer from Bingham and a layup from Hauser in the first three minutes of the game, but Illinois tied the game at 7-all.
- The Illini used a 10-2 run, with all of the scoring courtesy of Trent Frazier, to take a 17-9 near the midpoint of the half, but the Spartans used a three-point play and a dunk from Brown to pull within 17-14.
- The Spartans fell behind by 10 points, 24-14, but a jumper from Bingham with 4:14 to play cut the lead to 24-18.
- Illinois used a 10-2 run over the final 3:12 to take a 34-20 lead into the break.
- Michigan State turned the ball over 11 times, but just two in the second half.
- The Spartans committed nine turnovers in the first half and Illinois scored 15 points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes (none in the second half).
- The Spartans connected on just 34.5 percent of their shots from the floor (19-of-55), including 21.4 percent of their 3-point attempts (3-of-14).
- The loss ends a three-game win streak in the series for the Spartans.
- Michigan State leads the all-time series with Illinois, 64-61, and is now 21-40 all-time in games played in Champaign.
- MSU scored a season-low 55 points; it was just the second time scoring fewer than 60 points (Baylor, 58).
- The Spartans shot a season-low 34.5 percent from the floor (19-of-55).
- The Spartans also had season-lows in field goals made (19) and 3-pointers made (3).
- Senior forward Marcus Bingham Jr. scored in double figures for the 10th time this season and the 13th time in his career.
- Bingham also blocked four shots, the sixth time this season with at least four.
- He now has 140 career blocks and needs two more to pass Adreian Payne (2010-14) for fifth place all-time at Michigan State.
- Senior forward Gabe Brown scored 10 points, the 17th time in double figures this season.
