Chelios, Abdelkader Selected for 2022 Olympic Games

East Lansing, Mich. -- Former Spartan defenseman Jake Chelios has been announced as a member of Team China for the upcoming 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, while Justin Abdelkader will be an alternate for Team USA.
As the host nation, China will utilize the roster of Kunlun Red Star, a Beijing-based entry in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). China will have a tall task in the round robin, grouped with the United States, Canada, and Germany. Men's hockey competition in Beijing begins on Wednesday, Feb. 9, and the Chinese get their first competition the following day when they face off with Team USA.

Chelios is in his third season with Kunlun, appearing in 129 games. This season, he has three goals and six assists for nine points, the most goals of any of his KHL seasons. He helped man the Spartan blueline from 2010-14, appearing in 154 career games with 16 goals, 54 points and 195 penalty minutes. After completing his collegiate career, Chelios played for AHL teams in Chicago, Charlotte, and the Red Wings affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins, playing five NHL games for the parent club in 2018-19. Since turning pro at the end of the 2013-14 collegiate season, Chelios has played nearly 450 professional games.
Abdelkader is an alternate for Team USA, and is representing the US for the fifth time in his hockey career. He played for the US in the 2016 World Cup and the 2012 and 2014 World Championships, as well as capturing a bronze medal at the 2007 World Junior Championships. Abdelkader spent his professional career in the Detroit Red Wings organization, drafted in 2005 as the 42nd pick overall. He joined the club in the spring of 2008 at the completion of his junior season at MSU, serving as an alternate captain from 2016-2020. Abdelkader scored the game-winning goal in the waning seconds of regulation of the 2007 National Championship game, the most famous of hs 44 collegiate goals. He appeared in 124 games at MSU, and 739 in his career with the Red Wings (106-146--252).
The selection of Chelios and Abdelkader pushes MSU's total to 20 Spartans representing six different countries in hockey at the Olympic Games. Spartans have previously represented Norway, Italy, South Korea, Canada, and the United States, compiling 10 medals in Olympic competition. Players include Geir Hoff (Norway), Brock Radunske (South Korea), Tony Tuzzolino and Jason Muzzatti (Italy), Brian Glennie, Jason Woolley, Dwayne Norris, Rod Brind'Amour, and Duncan Keith (Canada), and Weldon Olson, Doug Volmar, Kevin Miller, Gary Haight, Mike York, John-Michael Liles, Ryan Miller, and Jim Slater (USA).
