Michigan State Women Fall to Purdue on Alumni Day

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball fell to Purdue, 69-59, on Alumni Day Sunday at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans now hold an 8-7 overall record and have an even mark in Big Ten play, standing 2-2. Purdue improves to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in league action.
Michigan State welcomed back junior guard Moira Joiner who had been out since Dec. 9. Fellow guards DeeDee Hagemann and Laurel Jacqmain also returned to the lineup after missing the game against Nebraska on Dec. 30.
For the first time this season, senior guard Nia Clouden did not reach double figures, ending the game with seven points and four rebounds. Junior forward Taiyier Parks led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points, adding six boards. Graduate forward Tamara Farquhar was close to a double-double against her former squad with 11 points and nine rebounds, including a game-leading seven on the offensive glass. Senior forward Alisia Smith also reached double digits with 10 points and six rebounds.
Clouden's seven points gives her 1,603 for her career, becoming just the sixth person with 1,600 career points, closing in on the No. 6 spot of 1,649 points held by Allyssa DeHaan, who was in attendance Sunday afternoon for Spartan Women's Basketball Alumni Day.
Purdue was led by Brooke Moore who scored 22 points off the bench.
Playing against her former team, Farquhar scored two quick baskets to help Michigan State jump out to an early 9-8 lead with 4:22 remaining in the first period. The Boilermakers used long-range shooting to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the period. Madison Layden led the way with nine points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
In the second quarter, the Spartans battled to chip away at the Purdue advantage. A pair of Alisia Smith free throws made it a 25-22 game with 5:38 left in the half. Despite remaining cold from the field, the Spartans re-took the lead 31-30 after a pair of Clouden free throws with 1:14 remaining in the period. MSU went into the locker room with a 33-30 lead, despite shooting only 38.7 percent from the field in the first half.
Michigan State took as big a lead as five points in the third quarter after a Parks layup at the 5:51 mark. The Boilermakers then made a surge, taking a 41-38 lead after a Rickie Woltman layup with under three minutes left in the quarter, but once again MSU found itself on top 44-43, heading in the final period.
The Spartan offense stalled to start the fourth period, going over four minutes without a basket. The Boilermakers took advantage with a 12-0 run to take a 55-46 lead. Michigan State wasn't able to tighten the gap in the final minutes of the game.
Michigan State returns to the road to take on Ohio State on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.

- Michigan State had its two-game home winning streak halted with Sunday's loss.
- The Spartans also had their two-game winning streak in the series vs. Purdue snapped with Sunday's loss, after MSU won both meetings last season ... Purdue now leads the all-time series 43-36, but the Spartans have still won five of the last eight meetings with the Boilermakers and still hold a 24-15 advantage in games played in East Lansing, despite Purdue winning three of the last five.
- Sunday's 10-point scoring margin was the first double-digit margin in the last five meetings, as the previous four had been by an average of 5.3 points, matching the previous double-digit margin of 10 points (PUR W, 76-66 on Jan. 30, 2020).
- MSU's starting line-up of senior guard Nia Clouden, freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann, graduate forward Tamara Farquhar, freshman guard/forward Matilda Ekh and senior forward Alisia Smith was the Spartans' fourth game with that starting five and MSU is now 1-3 with that starting line-up.

Parks posted her 16 points on a career-high tying six field goals, marking the seventh time in her career ... the 16 points by Parks marked the first time this season that she has led MSU in scoring, as well as the fourth time in her career.
- Graduate forward Tamara Farquhar was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds ... Sunday's 11 points was Farquhar's fourth double-digit scoring outing of the season and first since at Iowa (12/5) ... the nine rebounds marked Farquhar's season-long stretch of fourth-straight game with seven or more rebounds and seventh game of the season with seven+ boards, also having a stretch of three-straight games (11/16 - 11/21) ... Farquhar led MSU on the glass for the team-leading seventh time this season ... Farquhar also swiped a season-high three steals, also leading the Spartans and tying for the game-high.

- Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann dished out a team-leading and game-high tying eight assists, marking her fifth-straight game with five or more helpers, as well as eighth total game this season with five or more helpers ... Hagemann has now led the team in assists a team-leading eight times in the 15 games, pulling away from a tie for the team-lead with Clouden with seven games, as Hagemann and Clouden remain the only two Spartans to lead the team in assists this season.
