East Lansing -- Michigan State nearly came all the way back from a 3-0 second-period deficit, scoring twice in the third period and putting forth a flurry of shots in the final minute but fell, 3-2, to No. 16 UMass-Lowell and split the weekend series.Â
Â
MSU scored early and late in the third – Matt Basgall's shot from the right circle on an early power play made it a 3-1 game, and Daniel Russell finished a shot by Basgall at 17:33 with an extra attacker to bring MSU within a score. Lowell took a penalty with two minutes remaining and with the goalie pulled, MSU had a flurry of shots and near misses, including a review after time expired whether the puck in a goal-line scramble had actually crossed the line for an equalizer.
Â
Â
Â
Dylan St. Cyr was forced to be sharp early as UMass-Lowell was given a penalty shot opportunity when the game was just over three minutes old – but the goalie was up to the task and made the pad save. The visitors scored once in the first and twice in the second, when MSU sat for nine minutes of penalties. MSU managed to keep the shot margin 14-9 in the second period in favor of the visitors despite the manpower disadvantage.Â
Â
The Spartans held a 40-29 edge in shots on goal in the game, its second 40-shot effort in the first four games of the season.Â
Â
Â
Â
Michigan State starts the season with a 2-2 record, earning splits in each weekend. MSU welcomes Long Island University to Munn Ice Arena next weekend for a two-game set.Â

STATISTICS OF NOTEÂ Â Â Â Â
Â
First Period:  The officials called for a penalty shot just over the three-minute mark, and Dylan St. Cyr was up to the task, stopping the Carl Berglund shot with his right leg pad. The visitors found the back of the net less than a minute later, however, with Owen Cole putting a rebound past the goalie.  UML held a 10-7 edge in shots on goal in the opening period. Â
Second Period: The Spartans spent seven of the first 10 minutes with a player in the penalty box, and  St. Cyr came up with save after save – he had nine at the midpoint of the frame – to keep it a one-goal game.   At 14:32, blocked clearing pass found its way onto the stick of Berglund, who buried it to double the UMass-Lowell lead. MSU didn't have its first shot on net in the period until after the eight minute mark, but then tested goalie Henry Welsch with eight shots over the balance of the frame. MSU picked up another penalty with two minutes to go in the period, giving them nine minutes in the box total in the frame.Â
Â
Third Period: MSU got a power play chance less than two minutes into the third, and Matt Basgall's shot from the right point found its target just eight seconds into the man advantage, getting the Spartans on the board. Daniel Russell redirected a Basgall shot with 2:27 remaining in the game and St. Cyr on the bench, and Michigan State got to skate 6-on-4 in the final minute of the game after a holding the stick penalty was whistled against the River Hawks. MSU threw everything it had at goalie Henry Welsch, who stopped 22 pucks in the third period alone and 38 in the game.Â
