Women’s Golf Tees Off on Monday at Tar Heel Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team is back in action this week, beginning play in the Tar Heel Invitational at the Governor's Club in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Monday, Oct. 17. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, which includes seven teams ranked among the top-50 teams in the country by Golfstat, concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
The Spartans will tee off on Monday morning at 9 a.m., playing alongside host North Carolina, Wake Forest and Kentucky.
The teams will play on the par-72, 6-203 yard course at the Governor's Club. The Club is a nationally-recognized course in Chapel Hill built around an award-winning 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course.

The 15-team field includes seven teams ranked among the top-50 in the country by Golfstat – Duke (No. 8), Furman, Kentucky (No. 39), Louisville, Michigan (No. 28), Michigan State (No. 41), NC State (No. 47), UNCW, Princeton, Rollins, Tennessee (No. 43), Virginia Tech and Wake Forest (No. 1).

Michigan State is coming off a 15th place finish at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in suburban Chicago on October 4. The Spartans shot a 58-over par 922 (320-302-300) in a 15-team field that included 11 ranked among the top-40 teams in the country. Sophomore Brooke Biermann was the top finisher for MSU, tying for 45th place at 13-over par 229, while classmate Katie Lu was one shot back and finished in a tie for 47th place at 14-over par 230.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
The Spartans are playing in their fourth event of the season and opened the season with a pair of top-five finishes, first at the Cougar Classic and then at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Classic. Sophomore Brooke Biermann leads the team with a 72.33 scoring average, with her best finish at tie for 10th place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Classic. Fifth year Valery Plata is second on the team with a 73.11 scoring average. The team welcomes junior Valentina Rossi back to the lineup. Rossi missed the Windy City Classic while playing for her native Argentina and helping to lead her team to a gold medal in the South American Games.
TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL HISTORY
Michigan State has a strong history at the Tar Heel Invitational as the Spartans are making their 13th consecutive appearance in the tournament. The Spartans have won the event twice, most recently in 2019, when Plata took home medalist honors with an 11-under par 205, the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. MSU also won the event in 2009. In 2011, Caroline Powers set a then school-record 8-under-par 208 to finish second, while Sarah Burnham finished as the runner-up in 2015. Paz Marfa Sans set a tournament record with an 8-under-par 64 in the second round in 2017. MSU finished in 12th place in last year's event.
