White Becomes MSU Program Leader in Games Started
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A quartet of Spartans notched goals, and the Michigan State women's soccer team coasted to a dominant 4-0 result over the Maryland Terrapins Sunday afternoon on Ludwig Field.
As the lineup card was turned in before the game, graduate defender Samantha White became MSU's all-time career leader in games started with 80 caps. White, a native of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, surpassed program greats in Erin Konheim and Tiffany Laskowski. The duo combined to hold the previous record of 79 starts since the conclusion of the 2005 campaign.
The four-goal margin of victory was the largest by an MSU team against a Big Ten opponent since the Spartans defeated Purdue by an identical score on Oct. 18, 2013, at DeMartin Stadium. Additionally, the Spartans recorded a road victory over the Terrapins for the first time in the all-time series, previously going 0-1-3 on Ludwig Field entering Sunday's contest. Michigan State takes a narrow lead in the combined series, improving to 3-2-3 since the first meeting in 2014 when Maryland joined the Big Ten.
Michigan State improves upon its best-ever start to conference play, remaining undefeated halfway through the league's regular season slate. MSU rises to 9-1-3 overall on the year coupled with a 4-0-1 start against B1G challengers, needing only one more victory to match the Spartans' 2021 win tally in both categories. In defeat, the upstart Terrapins drop to 2-5-5 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
In the box score, the Green & White ran up commanding edges in every statistical category, highlighted by a 19-4 margin in shot attempts. Shots on goal favored the Spartans by a stunning 11-1 margin, and MSU published a 7-2 edge in corner kicks to top things off. Senior forward Lauren DeBeau, graduate midfielder Celia Gaynor, junior midfielder Zivana Labovic and freshman forward Maggie Illig all registered goals for the Spartans. In the assist column, graduate defender Ruby Diodati led the way with two, while sophomore forward Jordyn Wickes and junior forward Ranya Senhaji booked one apiece.
Michigan State took the opening possession and rarely relinquished the ball throughout the course of the first half, making a second home in the Terrapins' defensive zone. Despite neither team notching a shot on goal until the 30th minute, the Spartans finally found the back of the net in the 37th. Wickes collected the ball on the far right side of the field and sent it to the outside edge of the penalty area, where DeBeau sent an unhindered bending shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. Neither team registered a shot for the remainder of the half, and MSU took its halftime lead back to the locker room.
MSU stepped up offensively in the second half yet again, adding three more scores before time expired. A foul by Maryland's Amanda Schafer led to a free kick opportunity for Diodati about five yards outside the penalty area on the righthand side. She served up a solid ball into the box, where Celia Gaynor's header bounced off a Terrapin defender into the back of the net for MSU's second goal of the afternoon in the 50th minute of play.
Yet another Maryland foul just outside the penalty box led to Michigan State's third goal of the game about 20 minutes later. Diodati lined up to take the free kick in the final third, and her second pinpoint service of the game found a waiting Labovic, whose header rang true for the 3-0 lead. Senhaji found Illig for MSU's final score in the 89th minute, and the Spartans left Maryland with their third consecutive Big Ten win.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Kozal stood watch over the Spartan goal for all 90 minutes, recording a save on Maryland's only on-target shot and earning her eighth shutout of the season. Kozal earned her ninth winning decision of the 2022 campaign on Sunday, needing only one more to match her total from a year ago. For the Terrapins, Emory Wegener tended goal and allowed four scores against seven saves, taking the loss in the process.

On Sunday's performance and the upcoming game against Michigan...
"This was one of our more dominant possession matches, and to be able to pull that off in constant rain against a very athletic Maryland side is impressive. We were really sharp on both sides of the ball, and I am thrilled with the score line. We all know that our next match is against Michigan, but this group continues to live in the moment, and we took care of our business today."
