MSU Men’s Soccer Nipped By No. 8 Maryland, 1-0, Friday

Spartans edged by B1G-leading Terps.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Michigan State men's soccer was edged at No. 8 Maryland, 1-0, Friday night at UMD's Ludwig Field.
MSU had its two-match win streak halted with the loss, sliding to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Big Ten action, while the conference table topping Terrapins improved to 8-2-4 overall and 4-0-3 in B1G play.
"In order for us to get a road win on a Friday night in College Park, I think everyone needs to be sharp, and I don't think we're quite as sharp as we needed to be," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "It wasn't for a lack of effort or a lack of focus. We just didn't quite have it. Probably give a little credit to Maryland as well, but I thought our guys hung in there and fought until the end, and in one goal game you never know. Owen (Finnerty) was great today. It was a shame we couldn't get a shut out for him."
The Spartan defense withstood a frenzied Terps attack, and MSU turned UMD away time after time throughout the match. Graduate senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty made seven saves on the night, and the Michigan State was steady and solid to withstand the Terp pressure.
Maryland was able to break through and got on the board in the 14th minute, as the Terps scored off a corner kick. William Kulvik knocked it in after UMD tapped the ball around off the corner and the Spartan defense was unable to clear.
The home team Terps nearly went up 2-0 in the 37th minute, earning a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and lofted the ball in, but Finnerty made a point-blank save on a close-range shot, and the defense cleared it away, keeping the score 1-0 into halftime.
The second half was back-and-forth, with both defenses' standing strong, denying the offenses from getting the ball in the net.
Friday night's battle was a physical clash, with 25 fouls being whistled and 10 cards issued.
The Spartans have two Big Ten matches remaining in the regular-season, as MSU's penultimate regular-season match is on the road, heading to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 13 Ohio State on Tuesday, Oct. 25, before the regular-season finale vs. Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 30 at DeMartin Stadium.
