Guggemos nets Spartan goal.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Michigan State men's soccer was dealt a 4-1 road defeat at Penn State Friday night at PSU's Jeffrey Field.
Freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos netted MSU's lone goal of the night.
The Spartans had their three-match Big Ten Conference unbeaten streak halted with the loss, sliding to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in B1G play. Penn State moved to 5-3-3 overall and 2-0-2.
"I don't think we competed hard enough in the first half. We didn't really change tactics in the second half. I don't know if I didn't do my job to get the guys ready, but we just didn't compete at the level that we needed to in the Big Ten," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought in the second half we competed well and got a goal back, probably could have gotten another. I think moving forward if we play the way we did in the second half we will be alright."
Penn State opened the scoring with a goal by Peter Mangione in the fifth minute for an early 1-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 advantage in the 22nd minute on a play that began on the left side. A shot by Sean Bettenhausen was blocked, but Liam Butts took the rebound and snuck it past Spartan keeper Owen Finnerty to double the PSU lead. Butts added his second goal in the 25th minute for a 3-0 advantage for the home team. Penn State increased its lead in the 41st minute on a goal by Van Danielson for the 4-0 halftime lead.
Michigan State came out of halftime with pressure and it paid off in the 76th minute. Guggemos took a nice centering pass from senior midfielder Conner George near the penalty spot and the freshman fired a shot inside the left post, past PSU goalkeeper Owen Elliott for MSU's goal. Guggemos netted his third goal of season, now tied for the team lead with junior forward Greyson Mercer.
The Spartans pushed for more, but were denied by the Nittany Lion defense.
PSU finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots, but just a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, with MSU holding a narrow, 5-3, corner kicks advantage.
The Spartans return home to the rowdy confines of DeMartin Stadium for a non-conference match-up with Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in a 7 p.m. start time. That's the first of a two-match homestand for the Green & White, as the Spartans resume B1G action taking on Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
