Five in Double Figures as Michigan State Pulls Away from Grand Valley State, 73-56

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State had all five starters score in double figures and used a big second half en route to a 73-56 win over Grand Valley State in an exhibition game on Tuesday night at the Breslin Center.
Senior forward Malik Hall scored 15 points, had three rebounds and two assists to lead the way, while junior guard A.J. Hoggard scored 14 points, handed out five assists and had four steals.
Junior center Mady Sissoko finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots, while senior guard Tyson Walker had 12 points, four assists and six steals and graduate Joey Hauser added 10 points and four rebounds.

Michigan State opens the regular season on Monday, Nov. 7, hosting Northern Arizona. Tipoff at the Breslin Center is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be available on B1G+.

- Michigan State trailed by five points, 36-31, at halftime, but limited Grand Valley State to 16 points over the first 16 minutes of the second half to pull away.
- The Lakers held a 40-37 lead at the 16:51 mark after a jumper from Luke Toliver, but the Spartans responded with a 10-0 run and took a 47-40 lead on a layup from freshman forward Jaxon Kohler with 14:31 to play.
- Grand Valley State pulled to within 47-44, but a Sissoko basket and a 3-pointer from Hall with 11:24 left made it 52-44.
- The lead reached double digits on a layup and a 3-pointer and a layup from Hoggard at the 8:02 mark, making it 59-47.
- MSU took its biggest lead, 71-52, on a 3-pointer from Hall with 3:30 to play in the game.
- The Spartans had an early 9-5 lead after a jumper from Walker at the 16:25 mark, but the Lakers would use a 15-4 run and took a 20-13 lead on a basket from Trevor Smith with 10:15 to play in the half.
- MSU would tie the game at 25-all on a conventional three-point play from Sissoko with 5:36 left before the half and the teams would trade leads over the final four minutes.
- A jumper from Hauser gave MSU a 28-27 lead, but Grand Valley State used a 9-3 run over the final 3:55 and took a 36-31 lead into the break following a layup from Chinedu Kingsley Okanu.
