Women Fourth, Men Fifth at NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional

Four Spartans earn all-region honors in Terre Haute
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - In the penultimate race of the season, the Michigan State women finished fourth and men placed fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country course Friday morning. Â
"Both of our teams ran solidly today at regionals," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau. "Championship racing involves being consistent and running under pressure."
Graduate student Katie Osika led the Spartan women with a third-place, all-region finish, running 20:04 for 6k. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes earned her second-career all-region honor, finishing 24th in 20:38. Â
All seven Spartan women finished within the top 50. Junior Makenna Veen finished just outside of all-region honors in 26th (20:42), while senior Lauren Freeland (35th/20:58) and junior Emily Bardwell (36th/20:58) rounded out the scoring for MSU. Graduate student Grace Molloy (38th/21:01) and sophomore Kate Stewart-Barnett (41st/21:05) also finished for the Green and White.Â
Osika matched her 6k personal best in the race, while Bardwell and Stewart-Barnett set new personal bests.Â
No. 5 Notre Dame captured the team title with 34 points. The 19th-ranked Spartans finished with 124 points in a close race behind No. 25 Ohio State (111) and No. 21 Michigan (124). No. 22 Wisconsin finished fifth (129), and 17th-ranked Toldeo was sixth (131).Â
On the men's side, graduate student CarLee Stimpfel (30:24) and senior Aden Smith finished 19th and 20th (30:27), respectively, for all-region recognition. Â In the first 10k race of the season for the Spartans, all scorers finished within the top 40.Â
Freshman Riley Hough continued his impressive debut season for the Green and White, finishing just outside all-region recognition in 27th (30:36). Graduate student Fraser Wilson (35th/30:50) and junior Andrew Nolan (36th/30:52) rounded out the Spartan scorers. Graduate students Abdi-Fetah Ahmed (50th/31:06) and John Petruno (76th/31:41) also finished for MSU.Â
Smith and Nolan both set 10k personal bests in the race.Â
No. 8 Wisconsin finished first in the team race with 50 points, followed by No. 13 Notre Dame (61), No. 28 Michigan (79) and Butler (82). MSU finished fifth with 137 points.Â
"Katie Osika has been an incredible leader," continued Breznau. "She's held the team steady since the first day of our team camp. Aden Smith and Andrew Nolan continue to demonstrate the attributes of leadership and will be vital parts of our men's team moving forward."
Michigan State will await Saturday's NCAA selection show at 5 p.m. for team and individual berths at the 2022 National Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The show will be streamed live on NCAA.com. The NCAA Championships are set for Saturday, Nov. 19.Â
