DAVIDSON, N.C. – Michigan State wrestling set multiple program records, including the most team points and largest margin of victory in school history on Friday, as the Spartans registered a 52-0 result over the Davidson Wildcats inside John M. Belk Arena.
Â
MSU climbs to 1-0 following its largest scoring output in program history, surpassing a 51-0 outing against Cuyahoga Community College on Dec. 9, 1995. The 52-point margin of victory also surpasses the meeting against Cuyahoga CC for the largest scoring margin in program history. Against Division I opponents, Michigan State's 52-point outing Friday night broke the previous record of 47, totaled against Western Michigan on Jan. 19, 1982. In defeat, the Wildcats open the dual season 0-1.
Â
The Spartans registered six pins on the evening and garnered an additional six points by forfeit in the heavyweight class, with sophomore Nick West earning credit for the Wildcat default. Opening with a 6-0 lead already in hand, the Green & White got things started with a dominant performance from junior Tristan Lujan at 125. The Selma, California, native published a four minute and 52 second fall over Devon Diaco that pulled MSU ahead by a 12-0 score.
Â
No. 9 Rayvon Foley battled against Jackson Sichelstiel in the bout at 133 pounds, registering an 18-3 tech fall at the 6:32 mark to extend Michigan State's lead to 17. A pair of pins by Jordan Hamdan over Matt McLaughlin at 141 and Peyton Omania against Noah Frack at 149 led to a 29-0 Spartan advantage. Points continued to rain down for the Green & White as the dual wore on, with No. 18 Chase Saldate booking a commanding 9-1 major decision against Mark Koch at 157 pounds. No. 32 Caleb Fish logged a 2-1 decision against Jaden Hardrick in the 165-pound bout to put MSU ahead, 36-0.
Â
Luke Daly saw the Spartan lead grow to 40 team points, as the sophomore from Carbondale, Illinois, completed his 14-1 major decision over Brett Sanderlin at 174. No. 20 Layne Malczewski published the most dominant win of the evening, pinning Oliver Tipton in a mere one minute and 53 seconds at 184 pounds. The final bout of the evening featured No. 15 Cameron Caffey against Gavin Henry, and the MSU captain capped the evening's record-setting scoring off with a pin at 2:59 that completed the 52-0 result.
Â
Eight of the 10 Spartans in the lineup recorded their first official victories of the 2022-23 season on an individual basis. Fresh off a fourth-place finish in the 141-pound weight class at the MSU Open, Hamdan's record improves to 6-2 overall following his pin on Friday night. Fish, a native of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, climbs to 5-1 after taking third at the MSU Open at 165 and publishing a decision over Davidson.

"It's just a continuation of what we told our guys ahead of the season: set the tone for your season, look to go out and score points and make a statement. By in large, most of our guys did that tonight. They were looking to score points. They were offensive. All of the points that we scored came offensively, not defensively, which is great. The outcome of the dual was in large part due to bonus points, and in the end, I give our guys a lot of credit for achieving that."
