Top-Seeded Spartans Face Off Against Nebraska in B1G Semifinal
11/2/2022 4:14:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sixth-ranked and top-seeded Michigan State women's soccer continues its run in the 2022 Big Ten Tournament, as the Spartans get set for a semifinal matchup against fourth-seeded Nebraska on Thursday, Nov. 3. Kick time between MSU and Nebraska is set for 2 p.m. from Lower.com Field, the home of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew.
Â
HEAD COACH JEFF HOSLER SAID…
"We are excited to be in this environment at Lower.com Field. Playing at a neutral field, and at an incredible stadium like that should be an incredible experience for our program and our players. This is an incredible opportunity for us. There are two matches between us and bringing home another trophy, so we will continue to work hard and put our best foot forward. We had two really good days of training this week where we could just focus on soccer. The past two weeks have had a lot of emotional moments, so it was good to get back to solely focusing on doing our best to improve each day."
Â
KICKIN' IT
Michigan State returns to work following a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind victory in its quarterfinal matchup against the eight-seed Minnesota Golden Gophers. Minnesota roared out of the gates early in the first half, notching a banger goal with less than five minutes off the clock. MSU trailed by a 1-0 margin at the halftime break, marking the first deficit of the season for the Spartans through 45 minutes of work. Sophomore forward Jordyn Wickes directed the Green & White attack in the second half, notching her first-career multi-goal game with a brace that directed Michigan State to the semifinals. In recognition of her offensive efforts against the Golden Gophers, Wickes was named to both the TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News National Teams of the Week on Nov. 1.
Â
CROSSING THE CORNHUSKERS
Veteran head coach John Walker leads Nebraska into its semifinal matchup with an 8-6-5 overall record paired with a 5-3-2 ledger in Big Ten regular season play. The Huskers are competing in their first postseason since 2018, in which Nebraska reached the Big Ten Tournament semifinals before falling to eventual-champion Minnesota. Nebraska stunned fifth-seed Ohio State in a 4-0 blowout to advance to the semifinals four years ago. Sophomore forward Sarah Weber leads the Huskers in every offensive statistic, compiling 10 goals and five assists, amounting to 25 total points on the season. Junior Sami Hauk leads the way in net with 73 saves and a 0.702 save percentage.
Â
STORY OF THE SERIES: NEBRASKA
In one of the newer rivalries in the Big Ten Conference, Michigan State trails Nebraska by a narrow 4-3-2 margin entering the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs. Each team has won most of their contests in the series on their respective home fields, with MSU building a 2-1-1 lead in East Lansing compared against Nebraska's 3-1-1 record in Lincoln. The Spartans and Cornhuskers face off in the postseason for the first time in series history. Thursday's bout will also feature the first neutral site game for both opponents all-time. Michigan State and Nebraska did not meet in the 2022 regular season but battled to a 2-2 draw during the 2021 campaign at Hibner Stadium in Lincoln.
