EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State graduate senior Bryce Baringer has been named the Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon as the All-Big Ten defensive and special teams awards were released on the Big Ten Network.
Named for Illinois' Dike Eddleman and MSU's Brandon Fields, Baringer is the first Spartan to win the award since its inception in 2011. Baringer was also named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches to become the first Spartan punter to earn first-team all-league honors since the late Mike Sadler (2012 and 2013).
Baringer leads the FBS in punting with a 49.0-yard average, which is also currently an MSU single-season record and the second-best average in Big Ten history. Earlier on Tuesday, Baringer was announced as one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award.
In addition to Baringer, graduate senior Jayden Reed was named a third-team return specialist by the media and honorable mention by the coaches. Reed ranks first in the Big Ten in punt return average (8.8) with 13 returns for 114 yards and ranks second among active FBS players in punt returns (14.9 avg.).
Defensively, four Spartans earned All-Big Ten recognition, led by redshirt sophomore Cal Haladay, who garnered second-team plaudits by both the coaches and media. Haladay leads the Big Ten and ranks 10th in the FBS with a career-high 120 tackles (10.0 pg), the most by a Spartan since Greg Jones had 154 in 2009.
Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Simeon Barrow Jr. (coaches and media), graduate senior safety Xavier Henderson (media) and graduate senior defensive tackle Jacob Slade (coaches and media) received honorable mention.
The offensive awards will be released on Wednesday.
