Spartans Set to Host Final Fall Tournament of 2022

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis prepares for its final fall tournament of the 2022 season, as the Spartans welcome a competitive four-team field to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility for a three-day event. Play is set to begin on Friday, Nov. 4, and run through Sunday, Nov. 6.
HEAD COACH KIM BRUNO SAID…
"I think it's great to have the culmination of the fall season here at home. Obviously, Ayshe and Liisa won't be able to play this weekend since they've already met the fall tournament cap, but everyone else is going to get different looks. I think it will be fun to switch around and look at people at some different areas in our lineup. We will treat this as preparation for our upcoming dual match season, and we will see what our team has. I've seen unbelievable improvement in practice and in the matches, so I'm looking for our players to put everything together that they've learned this fall."
FIRST SERVE
Michigan State returns to the courts following a pair of impressive weekends at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. MSU saw all four student-athletes that competed ultimately reach the main draw of the ITA Midwest Regional, highlighted by a pair of singles win apiece by Liisa Vehvilainen, Marley Lambert and Issey Purser. Michigan State's doubles tandem of Vehvilainen and Ayshe Can also advanced to the main draw round of 16, dispatching with pairings from Bowling Green and Northwestern en route to a 2-1 finish at the event.
BATTLED IN BAMA
MSU's last time out at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic featured seven overall singles victories, highlighted by a dominant showing from freshman Juliette Nask. The freshman standout took home the title in the Beth Cleino Draw, sweeping past a trio of opponents. Nask defeated Hagar Ramadan of Troy and Mariya Shumeika of ETSU to reach the final, and ultimately triumphed over Mila Mejic of Indiana to secure the overall singles crown. Both Can and sophomore Charlotte Gisclon published a pair of wins individually in the tournament.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
The Green & White welcome representatives from Ball State, Butler and Marquette. MSU has not faced off against any of their three opponents for the weekend since the abbreviated 2020 spring season in which the Spartans defeated Marquette by a 4-3 margin. Senior Dagmar Zdrubecka is the only Spartan player remaining from the lineup that defeated Marquette in 2020. Ball State is coming off a 2022 MAC Championship season and a 19-5 overall record, including an NCAA Tournament Appearance in the process. Butler went 8-14 overall and lost in the Big East quarterfinals, while Marquette published a 13-10 overall record a year ago with a Big East semifinal defeat.
MATCHDAY CENTRAL
All matches will be played at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility beginning at 9 a.m. on each morning of the tournament. Action will be organized in a round robin team format, in which individual athletes from all four teams will compete against one another in both doubles and singles play. Fans interested in attending are encouraged to park in front of or adjacent to the facility on Mount Hope Road. Admission is free.
