Spartan ran fourth-fastest indoor mile in NCAA history at Windy City Invite
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Days after achieving history, Michigan State graduate student Morgan Beadlescomb has been named the Big Ten Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Beadlescomb's 3:52.03 time in the Men's Magnificent Mile at the Windy City Invite not only set a new personal record and a MSU record, but also clocked in at what is the fourth-fastest time ever for any NCAA men's runner in the indoor mile. The top-two times in collegiate history are held by Beadlescomb's competition on Friday. Former Oregon Ducks and current professional runners Cooper Teare (3:50.17) and Cole Hocker (3:50.35) both lowered their own personal records in the race from their collegiate PRs. Teare's 3:50.39 time in the 2021 season ranks No. 1 all-time in the NCAA, while Hocker's 3:50.55 in 2021 is second-best in college history.
The school record by Beadlescomb is the second he has broken this season, running a 7:43.22 in the 3000m men's race at the 114th Millrose Games last month. His mile time is the fastest in the NCAA this season as well.
A four-time NCAA All-American on the track and three-time NCAA All-American in cross country, Beadlescomb now holds five school records between indoor and outdoor track.
Beadlescomb is the second Spartan to earn weekly honors from the conference during the 2021-22 indoor track and field season, as pole vaulter Sophia Franklin was named the B1G Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week last week after breaking the school indoor record with a 4.38m vault at the Meyo Invitational.
Michigan State returns to action this weekend, heading to the Silverston Invitational on Feb. 18 and the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 19 in the team's final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships.
