Foley Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

Second Spartan to receive the honor this season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – After a weekend that saw him pick up two wins against Top-10 opponents, Michigan State redshirt senior Rayvon Foley has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.

The 133-pound Foley opened the weekend with a 6-2 decision over No. 8 Chris Cannon of Northwestern, getting takedowns in both the first and second periods, while riding Cannon for the entire third period and building up 3:49 in riding time on Friday.

Foley's weekend continued Sunday in his hometown, as the Ann Arbor native trailed early to No. 7 Dylan Ragusin of third-ranked Michigan. Down 2-0 in the first, the Spartan had two escapes before converting on takedowns in the second and third periods, adding the riding time bonus for a 7-2 decision.

Foley is now at a team-best 24-2 overall record with individual crowns at the Navy Classic and Southern Scuffle, going 12-1 in duals and having won five-straight matches. The 133-pounder is also 4-2 against ranked opponents this season and is second on the team with six major decisions.

This is the second B1G Wrestler of the Week for the Spartans this season, adding to redshirt senior 197-pounder Cameron Caffey winning the honor on Jan. 26. Foley's recognition makes this the first time since 2006-07 that MSU has won two B1G Wrestler of the Week honors in the same season, with Nick Simmons receiving the award twice that year. It is also the first time since 2005-06 that the Spartans have had multiple wrestlers earn weekly conference honors in a season, as that campaign that saw Simmons (twice), Tony Greathouse and R.J. Boudro all earn Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.

Michigan State closes out the regular season on Friday, Feb. 18 when the Spartans host No. 21 Central Michigan on Senior Night (6 p.m., B1G+).
