Magness Finishes Second in Women’s 3000m, Men’s DMR Team Places Third, Paris Sets MSU Record in 60m Hurdles
GENEVA, Ohio – Sophia Franklin was crowned the Big Ten indoor women's pole vault champion for the second time in her career, highlighting six podium finishes for Michigan State on Friday's opening day of competition at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
In addition to Franklin returning to the top of podium after winning the B1G indoor crown in 2019, Jenna Magness took second in the women's 3000m and the men's distance medley relay team placed third to lead MSU. Additionally, the women's DMR were fifth, while Avery Budz placed seventh in her second career women's pentathlon. Michael Davenport took eighth during the men's pole vault, while six Spartans advanced out of preliminary races to reach Saturday's finals.
The Spartans got Friday started with the women's pentathlon, as Budz was able to post personal bests in the 60m hurdles (9.33), shot put (9.28) and the 800m (2:22.76) while taking second place in the high jump (1.67m), tallying a PR of 3455 points to reach the podium. Olivia Lopez also competed in the pentathlon, finishing ninth with 3,365 points.
The men's heptathlon also completed four of seven events on Friday, with Heath Baldwin sitting in second overall after winning the shot put (14.79m) and high jump (2.06m) events, while Ryan Talbot stands fifth overall after placing first in the 60m dash with a 6.87 PR time.
MSU had its top moment in the women's pole vault, as Franklin made her 4.32m vault on the first attempt and no one else was able to match the 2019 B1G champion, handing Franklin the crown. The men's pole vault also saw Davenport take eighth with a 5.00m vault, while Trevor Stephenson was just short of the podium with a 10th-place finish (4.85m).
Three Spartans made it out of the preliminary races in the mile, as Katie Osika notched a 4:44.05 time in the women's trials to earn the ninth spot in Saturday's final, while John Petruno (3:58.16 PR) and Morgan Beadlescomb both recorded sub-four-minute times in the men's trials to reach the championship race.
The freshman duo of Terrence Muex and Noah Sage finished back-to-back in the men's 400m prelims to move on to Saturday's finals, as Muex posted a 46.96 PR time and Sage notched a time of 47.06.
Another school record fell on Friday when Jaiden Paris broke the MSU indoor mark for the 60m hurdle with an 8.25 PR time in that event's preliminary heats, the second-best time of the day and worthy of a spot in the championship race.
After Kaitlyn Hynes finished second in the unseeded women's 3000m race and Emily Bardwell and Fatima Giron earned spots in the finals as well, Magness led the contingent of five Spartans by claiming B1G runner-up with a 9:06.98 time after a heated battle with Minnesota's Bethany Hasz down the stretch, while Makenna Veen placed 12th at 9:26.54.
In the final races of the night, the women's distance medley relay of Kate Stewart-Barnett, Shakira Dancy, Lauren Freeland and Melanie Helder placed fifth with a time of 11:16.94 in the penultimate event. The men's DMR of Petruno, Sage, Jalen Smith and Andrew Nolan closed the evening by taking third place with a 9:39.30 time.
After one day of competition, the MSU women have amassed 24 points to stand in fifth place, while the Spartan men are in 11th place with seven points.
