MSU Edged by No. 17/17 Ohio State in Regular-Season Finale

EAST LANSING, Mich. - On an emotional Senior Day, the Michigan State women's basketball team was edged by No. 17/17 Ohio State, 61-55, in front of boisterous Breslin Center crowd.
After the game Michigan State said farewell to its quartet of seniors: Tamara Farquhar, Alisia Smith, Laurel Jacqmain and Nia Clouden.
Michigan State has now lost three-straight games to end the regular season, standing 14-14 overall and 8-9 in Big Ten action. Ohio State clinches a share of the regular-season crown with a 22-5 overall mark and a 14-4 B1G record.
For the first time since 2018, the Spartans had two players with double-doubles in Farquhar and junior forward Taiyier Parks. Farquhar scored 10 points and added a career-high 22 rebounds. She is the first Spartans since Lykendra Johnson in 2011 to bring down 20 boards. Parks returned to form with 15 points and 13 rebounds. In her final game in the Breslin Center, senior guard Nia Clouden led all scorers with 19 points.
Clouden remains second in Michigan State career scoring with 1,852 points. She also passed Tori Jankoska for No. 8 in career starts with 115, never missing a start in four seasons at MSU.
Ohio State was led by Taylor Mikesell who scored 17 points with four rebounds.
Clouden scored seven of MSU's first nine points, as the Buckeyes jumped out to an early 12-9 lead at the first media timeout. Ohio State remained ahead for all of the fast-paced first quarter, taking its biggest lead at the end of the period, 22-15. Thirteen of Michigan State's first quarter points came from Clouden and Parks.
The pace of the second half slowed down as the Spartans looked to get their offense going. Michigan State continued to hang around, using a 7-0 run to trim it to a 28-27 deficit, before a OSU timeout with 3:39 left in the half. Turnovers continued to plague MSU committing 10 in the period. Despite being held without a field goal the final 3:44, the Spartans only trailed at the half, 32-29.
The shooting woes continued for Michigan State early on in the third period, but MSU continued to stay within striking distance of the Buckeyes. A put-back by Parks tied the score at 37-all with under four minutes left in the third period. Michigan State took the lead 41-39 with a pair from the charity stripe by Clouden. Kateri Poole nailed a trey with time expiring to give Ohio State a 44-41 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams fell into scoring droughts in the fourth quarter, going over two minutes without a field goal. An 8-0 MSU run put Michigan State briefly put the Spartans on top before Tanaya Beacham broke the dry spell for OSU. The Buckeyes used a late 6-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Spartans. MSU ended the game shooting only 25% from the field and 13.3% from long range.

• In honor of MSU's Senior Day on Sunday, the Spartans started all four seniors: guard Nia Clouden, forward Tamara Farquhar, forward Alisia Smith and guard Laurel Jacqmain, along with freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann ... the was the first game this season with that starting five, as part of MSU's fifth different starting line-up overall this season.
• Graduate forward Tamara Farquhar pulled down a career-high 22 rebounds, becoming the first Spartan women's basketball player to pull down 20 boards since Lykendra Johnson snared 20 vs. IPFW on Jan. 15, 2011 ... Farquhar's 22 rebounds topped her previous MSU career-high of 16 vs. Florida Gulf Coast (12/21/21) ... it also surpassed her previous overall career-best during her time at Purdue of 18 at Northwestern (1/13/19)
• The 22 rebounds is tied for No. 3 on MSU's single-game rebounds list, matching Nanette Gibson vs. Minnesota on 2/9/80 ... Her 10 offensive boards also puts her tied for second on the Spartans' single-game offensive rebounds list, putting her even with LyKendra Johnson at Michigan on 1/9/11, Kristin Haynie at Illinois on 3/16/02 and Kisha Kelley at Wisconsin on 1/15/93.
• Farquhar also logged her second double-double of her Spartan career, adding 10 points to her 22 rebounds.
• Farquhar led the team in rebounding for the 16th time this season, while senior guard Nia Clouden led the team in scoring for the 21st time in 2021-22.
• Junior forward Taiyer Parks scored 15 points and matched her career high with 13 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season and sixth of her career.
• Parks and Farquhar became the first Spartan duo to register double-doubles in the same game since Jenna Allen (17p, 15r) and Taryn McCutcheon (16p, 12a) in a 99-69 MSU win over Bowling Green on Nov. 7, 2018.
• Going 10-for-10 from the free throw line Sunday, Clouden has now made 10-or-more free throws in seven contests this season, last doing so against Minnesota on Jan. 23, 2022 with 11 makes from the charity stripe in that game.
• Clouden has now started 115 games for the Spartans in her four-year career, not missing a start since arriving in East Lansing ... She is now in sole possession of No. 8 in the MSU career starts leaderboard, passing Tori Jankoska's 114 games started.
• Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann notched four steals against the Buckeyes, matching her season high from Feb. 6 at Minnesota ... Sunday was the fourth time this season that Hagemann paced the team in steals.
• Junior guard Jayla James pulled down a career-high five rebounds, surpassing her previous career high of three boards (twice, last vs. Nebraska on 12/30/21).
