EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State standouts Brian Allen and Trae Waynes are preparing this week for Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is being televised on NBC.
In addition to Allen, the starting center for the Rams, and Waynes, a cornerback and special teams player for the Bengals, linebacker Joe Bachie is on the reserved/injured list for Cincinnati.
Allen is making his second appearance in a Super Bowl, as he also played on special teams during his rookie season in the Rams' loss to New England in Super Bowl LIII. He will be one of just 13 Spartans to play in at least two Super Bowls.
Now in his fourth NFL season with the Rams, Allen has started 16 of 17 regular-season games and all three playoff games at center for Los Angeles. He has played 1,112 snaps in 19 total games, sixth most on the Rams offense. His 80.8 run-blocking grade by Pro Football Focus ranks eighth best among NFL centers.
The Hinsdale, Illinois, native played in 13 games and three postseason games with the Rams as a rookie in 2018 and started nine games at center in 2019, but was placed on injured reserve late in his second season after suffering a knee injury and did not see game action in 2020 before returning to the starting lineup in 2021.
A fourth-round NFL Draft selection by the Rams in 2018, Allen played in 51 career games for the Spartans from 2014-17, including 38 starts (17 at center, 16 at left guard, five at right guard). He started the final 28 games of his MSU career and was named a team captain in 2017 as a senior.
After missing the entire 2020 season due to an injury, Waynes returned in 2021 to play in five regular season games, including four starts, and all three playoff games for the Bengals en route to his first Super Bowl appearance. He made his Bengal debut in Week 4 and recorded four tackles against the Jaguars, but was back on the reserve/injured list after just two games. He returned late in the regular season to play in three games and has seen action on special teams during the playoffs. Overall, he has 11 tackles (10 solo, one assist) and one pass break-up.
A first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in 2015 by the Vikings, Waynes has played in 79 career regular-season games, including 57 starts at cornerback, throughout his career. He has collected 253 tackles (220 solo, 33 assists), 43 passes defended and seven interceptions. Waynes was a three-year letterwinner for the Spartans (2012-14) and was the starting cornerback on the 2013 Big Ten and Rose Bowl Champion team that finished No. 3 in the national polls and set a school record with 13 wins. As a junior in 2014, Waynes a first-team All-Big Ten selection and second-team All-American.
Although Bachie was placed on the reserved/injured list on Dec. 22, he played in nine games for the Bengals this season, including two starts at linebacker (Week 14 vs. 49ers, Week 15 vs. Broncos). He recorded 28 tackles (16 solo, 12 assists) with a career-high eight stops in Week 13 against the Los Angeles Chargers and had six tackles against the Broncos in a starting assignment in Week 15. Bachie signed with the Bengals in the offseason and made his Cincinnati debut in Week 6 at Detroit against the Lions. A four-year letterwinner at MSU (2016-19) and a three-year starter at middle linebacker, Bachie was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior in 2018 and finished his Spartan career with 285 tackles and 27.5 TFLs. He made his NFL debut with Philadelphia in 2020, playing in four games with the Eagles.
