Gisclon Clinches Thriller for Women’s Tennis Over Arizona
2/9/2022 9:31:00 PM | Women's Tennis
EAST LANSING, Mich. – It came down to the sixth singles court, but the Michigan State women's tennis team was able come away with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Arizona on Wednesday evening at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Freshman Charlotte Gisclon's singles victory extended the MSU winning streak to four, as the Spartans moved to 4-1 overall. For the Wildcats, their record shifted to 3-1 on the season.
In doubles play, close battles early led to senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can taking a 6-3 win over the Wildcats' Parker Fry and Kayla Wilkins on the second court, while graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz quickly followed by claiming a 6-3 score against Kirsten Prelle and Salma Ziouti. The third doubles match that saw Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka take on Belen Nevenhoven and Lexi Ryngler went unfinished to end the doubles portion early.
Moving on to singles action, Lewis got the victory against her former team with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wilkins in the top match, but Arizona got their first point when Ziouti wrapped up a 6-1, 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court over Pietrowicz. The Wildcats tied the match when Fry defeated senior Lauren Lemonds by a 7-5, 6-3 score in the No. 5 spot, and Arizona took the lead when Midori Castillo-Meza came back in both sets to beat Can, 7-5, 7-5. Coming down to the third and sixth courts, Stephens rebounded after losing the first set to defeat Ryngler in the No. 3 position (4-6, 6-0, 6-2), tying the team score at 3-3. After taking the first set via tiebreaker and dropping the second set, Gislcon rebounded by finishing off a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 win over Prelle to end the night on court No. 6 and preserve the MSU victory.
"We have been having really good practices, putting a lot of really good days together, and I've been really confident in what we've been doing," said head coach Kim Bruno. "Yesterday was a little off, I don't know if it was nerves, but these girls today accomplished something against a team that on paper should probably beat us by coming to our home courts and putting it together, leaving it all out there. They emptied the tank, and that's what it is about. A freshman stepping up to clinch the match in Charlotte, I can't imagine what her nerves had to have been. You can't replicate these situations, and for these girls to keep going through them and figuring it out, that's just big. That's what it is about."
The Spartans' 4-1 start to the spring season is their best since opening 2017-18 with a 4-1 record, while MSU takes a 1-0 lead over Arizona in the all-time series. Gisclon's win over Prelle also extended her singles winning streak to four, while Stephens improved to a three-match winning streak.
Michigan State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18, when the Green and White host Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m.
