EAST LANSING, Mich, - Michigan State women's tennis extended its winning streak to five matches with a 6-1 win over Eastern Michigan Friday evening at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-1 this season, while the Eagles fall to 5-5 this season. The 5-1 start is the best for Michigan State since opening the 2016-17 season with a 6-1 record.
"We went out there and got the job done, and that is what is most important. It is not easy to win. No matter who your opponent is, you can't underestimate who you are playing," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "You have to be up for every single match, and the girls went out there and did what they were supposed to do. It was a good team effort. I was really happy that Tia (Mukherjee) was able to play today. She fought through some nerves and was able to get it done."
Playing with a few different doubles combinations, the Spartans swept all three doubles matches.
In the No. 1 doubles spot, senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can defeated EMU's Isabelle Popma and Vasavi Ganesan, 6-4. The doubles point was secured at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4 win by graduate student Mary Lewis and junior Tia Mukherjee against the Eagles' Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney. This is the first time this season that Lewis and Mukherjee have teamed up.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka concluded the action with a 6-4 win over Prerna Vichare and Sabina Brichackova. Gisclon and Zdrubecka are now 2-1 as a pair this season.
Michigan State continued to roll in singles action, starting with Mukherjee on court No. 6. Playing in her first dual match of the season, she stopped EMU's Emma-Lou Pommiers in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 2 position, Stephens beat Vichare, 6-1, 6-3 to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Spartans.
The match was clinched at the No. 5 position with another straight set win. Gisclon defeated Ganesan, 6-1, 6-2. The final match of the night was decided in three sets. On court No. 4, senior Lauren Lemonds came from behind to stop Brichackova, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 in a tiebreaker.
The only blemish for MSU came on court No. 1 when Lewis was stopped by Pelayo, 7-5, 6-4.
The Spartans will conclude their three-game homestand next week, hosting Bowling Green on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.
