EAST LANSING, Mich. – After resetting the indoor program record for the second time this season, Michigan State pole vaulter Sophia Franklin was named the Big Ten Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The Spartan senior broke her previous school record of 4.27m from the Michigan Invitational in January with a 4.33m vault at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 5, and then topped that with a 4.38m mark on her third try at that height later in the day, earning her first place in the event at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.
Franklin's 4.38m height ranks first in the conference this season, a mark that sits eighth among NCAA leaders as well.
The Okemos, Michigan native also holds the outdoor school record for women's pole vault, notching a 4.37m height at the 2019 Spartan Invitational. A 2019 and 2021 NCAA Outdoor All-American, Franklin was the 2019 B1G Indoor champion and the 2021 B1G Outdoor champion for the Green and White.
Michigan State continues its preparation for the Big Ten Indoor Championships when it heads to the Windy City Invite, hosted by Wisconsin, on Feb. 11-12.
