EAST LANSING, Mich. – Coming off a thrilling win at West Virginia to end its road trip, the Michigan State women's tennis team returns home this weekend for a pair of big matchups at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Coming in at No. 55 on the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the Spartans open a three-match homestand on Saturday, March 12 when they host 38th-ranked Columbia in MSU's final non-conference match of the spring at 11 a.m. The Green and White will then begin Big Ten Conference play on Sunday, March 13 when Indiana comes to town for another 11 a.m. showdown.
Winners in eight of their last nine contests, the Spartans had a six-match winning streak snapped by James Madison last Saturday but righted the ship with a 4-2 victory over Marshall the next morning and a 4-3 comeback win against the Mountaineers on Wednesday.
MSU dropped the doubles point to WVU despite senior Maja Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis picking up a 6-4 win on the No. 2 court. Lewis then won her singles match in the top spot by a 6-1, 6-3 score, but the Mountaineers earned wins on the fourth and sixth courts to put MSU on the edge of defeat. Pietrowicz then got a three-set victory on the No. 3 court, while fellow seniors Nicole Stephens and Lauren Lemonds helped secure the Spartan comeback after delayed starts. Stephens had her first set on the No. 2 court go up 16 points in a tie-break, but she took that and the second set to even the team score at 3-3, while Lemonds claimed a win in three sets on the fifth court to close out the MSU victory.
Freshman Charlotte Gisclon and sophomore Ayshe Can pace MSU with 10 wins apiece in singles play, while the senior trio of Lemonds, Pietrowicz and Stephens all have nine singles victories this season. Stephens has been especially strong this spring, going 6-1 in dual matches, while Can has a team-high seven singles wins in dual competition.
On the doubles side, Lewis and Pietrowicz's win at West Virginia moved them to 10-9 as a pairing this season, while Stephens and Can have gone 8-5 together and are 7-3 since dual matches began.
Columbia was off this past week after playing four matches in five days from Feb. 23-27, as the Lions defeated regional foes St. John's, 4-2, and NJIT, 4-0, on the same day before dropping a 4-1 match to No. 45 Iowa State but rebounded with a 4-2 win over No. 65 Washington State to close the stretch two days later. Sitting at 9-3 this season and ranked No. 38 in the ITA team rankings, Columbia has Akanksha Bhan ranked among the top singles players in the country at No. 121 with a 9-11 solo record.
Indiana enters the weekend with a 7-5 mark and will face No. 32 Michigan on Saturday before making the trek to East Lansing. After a loss to Utah to open the spring, the Hoosiers rattled off a five-match winning streak but have gone 2-4 since then. Lara Schneider paces IU with a 15-3 singles records, and she also leads the way on the doubles court with her partner Laura Masic, as the Hoosier duo are 11-4 this season.
Saturday will be the first all-time meeting in dual competition between MSU and Columbia.
The B1G showdown on Sunday will be the 58th meeting in the all-time series between the Hoosiers and Spartans. IU holds a 48-8-1 edge all-time after splitting two matches last season, as both teams picked up a win on their home court.
Michigan State closes the three-match homestand next Saturday, March 19 with a conference contest against Purdue. That match is slated for a noon start.
